If this is your first year of college, it is important to keep a few things in mind when learning how to be a good roommate:

  1. Respect Each Other’s Boundaries: It is important to remember that you are sharing your room with someone else, so being mindful of not only your belongings but also your roommate’s space is important. Aside from the physical space, it’s also important to be mindful of their need to privacy.
  2. Communication is Key: If you are having issues with your roommate, it is important to communicate that with them. Passive aggressiveness will not help in the situation because your roommate will not know what’s wrong. It is important to be honest and possess an open line of communication between you and your roommate.
  3. Compromise, Compromise, Compromise: When you are living with others, it is important to learn how to compromise! There will be plenty of moments where you might not agree with your roommate. Having respect, an open line of communication, honesty, and compromise are all important components to being a good roommate!
