3 Life Lessons from The Flash

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at F and M chapter.

I have recently been obsessed with watching The Flash. I am a superhero lover and although I have never heard of the The Flash, I was intriqued to immerse myself into its world. After finishing the first season of this CW show, I noticed that everyone could relate to Barry Allen (as well as the other characters) in some shape or form. Each episode leaves viewers feeling understanding that “we are Barry Allen.” Among all of the life lessons that the characters of this series has learned, here are three of my favorite words of wisdom that this show has taught me:

1. Confidence is key.

“If you tell yourself that you’ll faze out of there, you’ll do it.” -Barry Allen on Earth 2.0

Despite the things that others may say about you, confidence is a powerful weapon. At the end of the day, your confidence for yourself will get you through everything that stands in your way. Like Barry Allen, many of us are plagued with the harsh realities of self doubt and feelings of hopelessness. Many times there are various obstacles that life presents us in which it may seem impossible to overcome. However, it is important to keep a positive mindset and to believe in yourself. If there is one thing that you could learn from Barry Allen’s adventures as the Flash, it would be to never stop believing in yourself, because that confidence is the key to your success.

2. Hope makes things possible.

Throughout the series, every character in The Flash have experienced their moments of doubt and hopelessness. Whether it was Caitlin’s dilemma of finding love or Barry’s struggle with finding a way to defeat Zoom, the thought of the impossible will always get in the way of one’s outlook on hope. However, no matter how hopeless our situation might seem, or even how the world might look, a sliver of hope is all we need to keep going. Barry would not have been able to defeat Zoom if he did not have his loved ones believing in him. In the same way, he would not have been able to achieve the impossible if he did not possess the hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Hope is a real thing and when there is hope, anything is possible.

3. Revisiting your past could help you move on.

“Sometimes the only way to move forward is to revisit the things in your past that were holding you back. You have to deal with them head on, no matter how scary they may be, because once you do you’ll see that you will go further than you ever imagine.” -Barry Allen

Our past is a part of our identity. Despite our attempts to forget or outrun it, those memories as well as the people in our lives, will always be a part of us and shape our path. Moving on is a difficult process but sometimes the past can help us heal. Learning how to cope with the things that have hurt us will serve as a way to, not only prepare us for what life has in store for us, but also for changing us in ways that we may not think are possible. When the weight of your past is getting in the way of your advancement to the future, revisit those burdens and utilize it to change yourself for the better.
