The Winter Coat Guide 2013

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

Last week we gave you the “Winter Boot Guide 2013”, an article which took the hard work and stress out of buying your beloved pair of winter boots. Now HCX has done it again! We have chosen our top 5 Autumn/Winter 2013 trends, and found out where to buy the best high street versions.  So Her Campus Exeter presents you with our Winter Coat Guide 2013- coats that we think best mirror their catwalk counterparts, for under £100, and of course, in shops you can find in Exeter. So on your cold winter walks to campus why not wrap up warm in one of these cosy coats, and look fabulous at the same time?

The Oversized

The style which first reigned the runways at Stella McCartney may seem a bit swamping at first, but if you find the right shade and style then we promise it will look flattering. Take this  H&M coat (£99.99) for example,  part of Isabel Marant’s limited edition line for the high street store, it is double breasted and a fab grey hue- very similar to the Stella McCartney A/W version. Opt for this classic style over the “big blazer” alternative and avoid looking like you’re wearing your boyfriend’s suit, and instead look like you’re strutting your stuff on the catwalk.

The Pink

Perish all thoughts of candyfloss or bubblegum when you look at these gorgeous coats, because this is THE colour to be seen in this season. A firm favourite in a ladylike shape at Céline, channel this trend by nipping to Topshop and picking up this Fluffy Swing Boyfriend Coat for a cool £89. Big enough to fit a jumper underneath- perfect for still looking chic and fabulous whilst walking to a 9am in these freezing Exeter temperatures- yet still looking sleek and elegant, this is a perfectly balanced coat.

The Trench

A firm favourite on the likes of Alexa Chung and Olivia Palermo, the Trench coat adorned British fashion house Burberry Prorsum’s runways this Autumn/Winter.  This rainy-day classic has been updated this season with leather trimmed details, and HCX’s favourite is this Leather Appliqué Trench from Mango. You can find Mango in House of Fraser on the High Street, and it comes in just under our budget £99.99; fabulous!

The Parka

Not just practical but also massively on trend, Prabal Gurung and Burberry showed us how to work the Parka this winter. There are plenty of high street styles out there for you to choose from, but we suggest opting for a fur-embellished or military inspired number- perfect to keep warm whilst staying bang on trend. Get yourselves down to Miss Selfridge where you can bag yourself a bargain with this Navy Fur Collar Parka Jacket for only £67.50 (down from £79!). A great take on the Prabal Gurung version, the navy colour is a fresh change from khaki and looks great with tan accessories!

The Biker

Finally we present you with the holy grail of cool-girl coats, the Biker jacket. We can all channel our inner Cara Delevigne by nipping to Zara and picking up this gorgeous leather-look jacket for £69.99. This “Motorcycle Jacket with Zips” is almost identical to its Saint Laurent partner and would look classy yet sexy teamed with a pair of skinny jeans and some over the knee boots. Also the silver zips are a nice change from the usual gold ones found on the high-street- get down to Zara before it sells out!

There you go ladies, HC’s pick of the best high street versions of designer coats – don’t buy them all at once!
