Which Christmas Jumper are you?

It’s Christmas soon – just in case you didn’t get the memo! And that means it’s time to invest in a new Christmas jumper. Forget shopping for others for a second and take a moment to think about yourself. The C-J is not a simple decision. There is not one standard Christmas Jumper. You could channel Colin Firth in his smoldering reindeer jumper in Bridget Jones or Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone with his classic white knit.

It is only really socially acceptable to wear Christmas jumpers between mid-November and early January (unless you opt for snowflakes, which makes it a ‘winter’ outfit option until at least Feb) and yet the Christmas jumper is an item of clothing which gives us more excitement than mince pies. If you do not already own one but feel that this is the year to get your festive knit on, here is a quick guide to help you choose the correct Christmas Jumper to wear underneath that mistletoe.

The Novelty Jumper– In essence it’s a plain coloured jumper with a picture of a festive creature on the front. Extremely Christmassy and perfect for displaying holiday excitement to the full.

The Classic– For a simply gorgeous item of knitwear go for the Aran knit jumper. A cream one with some little bobbles knitted in can be easily accessorized and looks great with red lipstick.

The Fair Isle/Patterned– On the same level of festivity as the novelty jumper, the Fair Isle patterned jumper screams ‘I LOVE CHRISTMAS’ whilst also looking rather more chic and fashionable.

The Glittery– Whilst some people stay in, watch TV and eat consistently throughout December, others view Christmas as a time to celebrate and PARTAY. If this is you then keep your jumper on the glittery side: a bit of embellishing here, some sparkly wool there. Your outfit will shimmer at any family occasion.

The Fashion Conscious– Keen to display your festive side but can’t quite part from your fashion-conscious self?  Topshop have mixed the two in the form of a Christmas Jumper with a Houndstooth pattern. Genius.

The All-YearerThis jumper requires no festive commitment. It is basically an excuse to buy a new jumper to wear over the winter break but it can also be a trans-seasonal purchase and therefore completely socially acceptable in Spring. It may be a tad unfestive, but will redeem itself with its versatility. Opt for burgundy. Not only is it the colour of the season, it is festive too!

The Decorative– If you want to go all-out or occasionally find yourself envious of the decorated Christmas trees popping up, get an eye-catching jumper like this bad boy. It’s festive, it makes a statement and it’s gorgeous! Find similiar versions all over the high street.

The Homemade– Arguably the best kind of Christmas jumper. If you have a relative who has the ability and patience to knit then place your orders for next year’s Christmas gift early. Your jumper will not only radiate festive love but will also have been made with family love.

And if the jumper is too daring for you, maybe you should settle for some socks… you can always hide those in your boots if you get nervous.
