A Weekend in Cardiff

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

If you’re ready for a well-deserved study break and are looking to get out of Exeter, why not head across the border to Wales and spend a weekend exploring Cardiff? The capital city is only a short train journey away and is guaranteed to help you forget your deadline stress. If you’re not sure where to start, here are some of our top things to do in Cardiff.

Cardiff Bay

The docklands have been recently modernised and are now one of the most beautiful areas of the city. The picturesque harbour gives you the chance to hit the water and take a boat ride to nearby seaside towns. If you prefer to keep your feet on dry land, Cardiff Bay is also home to the National Assembly building and the Wales Millennium centre. There’s also the bustling Mermaid Quay, which is full of bars and restaurants.

City Parks

If the sun is shining, take a trip to Cardiff’s answer to Hyde Park. Described as the ‘green heart of the city’ the picturesque gardens of Bute Park offer an escape from the busy city. During the summer months the park is a perfect picnic spot. If you’re feeling more adventurous you can also head out to Roath Park and hire a rowing boat or pedalo.

Culture

Culture buffs will not be disappointed by Cardiff – the city is teeming with history and art. Cardiff Castle is located in the middle of the city, and is a must-see for visitors. Take a tour around the apartments and house, and learn about some of it’s famous past residents. If you’re on a budget the National Museum of Cardiff is free to all and contains natural history and art galleries, as well as special exhibitions.

Shopping

If you’re anything like us at HCX and love to shop, Cardiff is the place for you. St David’s shopping centre is host to pretty much every store imaginable. If you head further out there are plenty of vintage shops and boutiques to explore. And if you need a rest from all the bag carrying, Cardiff is also a hub for foodies. As well as all the normal chains, Cardiff contains a myriad of independent cafes and restaurants. Whatever you’re craving the city is sure to have it!

Nightlife

What’s a city break without a night out? Cardiff has plenty to offer in terms of nightlife, from chilled bars to larger clubs. If you’re a Cheesy Tuesdays fanatic you’ll love Popworld, which plays nothing but noughties and nineties bangers. For a busier clubbing experience, head to Pryzm. And if you want to dance into the early hours, Live Lounge is the place for you – open until 5am, you definitely won’t be bored.

Events

Whatever time of year you choose to visit, there’s sure to be something special going on in the city. From the Christmas markets and ice rinks throughout the winter months to the pop up beaches over summer, there’s always something to keep you entertained. Do some research before your visit and check out what events are on. If Cardiff comes with one guarantee, it’s that you won’t be stuck for things to do – happy exploring!

I am a fourth year student reading for a degree in English with History and Middle Eastern Studies. When I'm not busy writing essays, I love fleeing campus and exploring anywhere and everywhere. My favourite place in the world (other than Exeter, of course) is Iquitos in South America.
