Wake up from Winter: How to Spruce up Your Wardrobe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

Despite the weather not being exotic by a long shot, the temperatures are rising, the days are getting longer and soon everything thing will be waking up from winter – and so should you! Although the high street is presenting us with so much summer clothing that we’re not quite brave enough to wear yet, Her Campus Exeter has some tips for you on how to update your look using the latest spring trends without feeling the chill.

The Nude Nail

Updating a nail trend is a simple and cheap way to immediately freshen up your everyday look. This spring, ditch the bright colours and the nail art and experiment with subtle nude and neutral shades for an understated and classy look. What’s more, during the summer, pale nude tones will look great against a tan and complement your skin tone. Although best known for the eye-catching bright colours, Barry M has some more neutral nail polishes which are only £2.99! Try this darker colour (Mushroom) when wearing pale colours and a more pink tone (Nude) with a golden tan. If you want to splash out, Essie have an extensive range of neutral nail varnish at £7.99. We love this sleek granite colour (Chinchilly), it’s perfect for wearing with a monochrome outfit.

The Hot Pink Lip

In contrast to the burgundy hues of the winter, this season is all about bright pink lips. There’s no better way to change your look than updating from dark to bright, it’s guaranteed to make you feel summer-ready with a single stroke of lippy! Go for coral shades to avoid looking too 80’s neon rave. An orange tone will make blue eyes pop! We love ‘Oh la la’ from Topshop (£8) and Revlon Colourburst lipstick in ‘Fuschia’ at only £7.99!

New shoes

With so many new shoe trends to choose from, treating yourself to a new pair of shoes is a must! Shoes can be such a great way to update your wardrobe and complete a look, not to mention putting spring back in your step! For a new pair of everyday shoes, try a ballet pump with a block heel or an ankle strap, trends that were all over the Spring/Summer 2013 shows. This pair from Topshop are great value at £28 and would look great for a day at the Forum with cropped jeans.

The Denim Takeover

Denim is everywhere this spring, and not just in jeans. With dresses, skirts, tops, shirts and shorts all making an appearance in denim, there is something for everyone and for every occasion. A simple denim shirt like this polka dot one from Asos (£35) worn with bright trousers and sneakers is a great way to keep your casual day-wear looking fresh. On the other hand, for a more summery vibe, an A- line denim skirt is perfect to wear with a cute shirt and sweater combination, creating a vintage 90’s vibe.

Orange Owns It

This spring, orange owns the show (and we’re not talking fake tan!) From clothing to accessories, bringing a hint of orange into your wardrobe will instantly bring your look up to speed and add some sunshine to your day, even if the weather has forgotten its supposed to be spring!

Asos have a great range of bright earrings that would make any plain outfit instantly more glamorous, especially for a night out. Wear your hair up in a high, sleek pony tail for added effect.

For the more adventurous, try orange coated jeans from River Island (£40). They are such a versatile investment piece; dress down with a neutral sweater and pumps or dress up with a racy black body to hit the town!

And finally, don’t be ashamed to bring out the sunnies at any given opportunity! They always make it feel like summer is on its way!
