The Ultimate Winter Coat Guide

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

As the weather begins to change, the nights draw in, and everything just seems chillier, your trusty jacket that kept you warm in the summer evenings just won’t cut it anymore. With this sad realisation that any chance of an Indian summer has past, here is a winter coat guide to get you through the colder months.

When choosing your coat there are some important things to bear in mind… What do you want from your chosen coat?  Do you want practicality or style?  Do you want both?  Are you organised and carry an umbrella or do you need a hood for when the rain catches you out?

The Parka

A style which is perfect for casual dress, it can become an essential item in your day-to-day wardrobe. For all styles I would recommend buying a slightly larger size, rather than opting for a more fitted look, so that you can layer up in the cold.

The Leather Jacket

This is no doubt a staple wardrobe item adored by many. Though not always the most practical choice, for those rare winter days that are both warmer and dry this can be the perfect choice to take you from day to night.

The Aviator/Sheepskin

This can be seen as a functional yet stylish option for the cold weather. Like a leather jacket, this style can work just as well with skinny jeans as it does with a dress, making it another versatile option.

The Camel Coat

For smarter occasions, camel coats or other coloured coats can be a good option brightening up winter. This style never dates and these can also be worn through to spring making them an adaptable piece. On the high-street a great variety can be seen, from coats which are oversized to those which are more tailored meaning that there are plenty of classic styles to choose from.

The Hooded Coat

If you live in England you will definitely be used to the rain and predictably bad weather. Even if the weather forecast suggests sun, you have to be prepared for rain. This style of coat can be seen as the most practical option and with many styles featuring fur trimmed hoods. This coat offers both warmth and protection from rain making it a great investment for this time of year.

The Barbour/Waxed Jacket

Traditionally just seen in the countryside, this brand has branched out to cover a wider market. The lighter weight styles mean that you can layer up as much as you want to and keep dry.
