Transitional Dressing: Winter to Spring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

This time of year can cause havoc with your wardrobe. One moment the sun is shining and you are dressed for spring and the next it is raining and it feels like winter is here to stay. Here are some tips to consider when dressing for the next couple of months to help you keep up with the changing and unpredictable weather conditions as one moment you will need your sunglasses and the next you will need an umbrella.

Layer up

Layering up is vital for this time of year. It means you can keep warm in the shade but shed the excess clothes when in the sun. Camisoles or floaty vest tops are perfect for this time of year as they can be worn on their own or under jackets and jumpers for a casual spring look.

Leather jackets

Leather jackets are also incredibly practical for this time of year. Though these may not be warm enough for the winter months, they are perfect for the spring season. A leather jacket is light enough to easily carry around during the day and put on in the evening when the temperature gets cooler. Jackets can also be viewed as a wardrobe staple for this time of year as they can be dressed up or down for all occasions.

Floral/Colour

Floral patterns are the traditional prints seen in shops and on the catwalk for the spring season. If you don’t quite think the weather is warm enough yet, team spring dresses, skirts or shorts with tights and jackets to adapt your wardrobe during this transitional time. Colour blocking or adding bright colours to your outfits will also embrace the spring season. Pastels are a more delicate option, but can be teamed with floral prints for a complete spring look.

Denim

Denim is also a great material to wear during this time of year. Denim jackets or shirts can be teamed with skirts, shorts and also worn over dresses. White jeans are also a wardrobe staple for this time of year as they are a good variation from the usual blue jeans, and can be worn with spring prints but also with leather and denim.

Scarves

Though the sun may suggest it is warm outside- don’t be fooled! The fluctuating weather means you have to constantly be prepared. However, the addition of a scarf can solve many issues. Scarves are an easy way to tie together a cool-weather look.

Shoes

Ankle boots can be worn with spring/summer dresses to create an individual look during this transitional time. Equally, spring/summer style footwear, such as pumps or high-heeled sandals, can be worn with jeans and more casual outfits. By mixing winter footwear with spring outfits and vice versa, you can create the perfect combination for the weather.
