Top Ten Best Themes for Student House Parties

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

Now Halloween is over, you may be struggling to come up with a theme for your house party amongst all the busyness of university life but don’t worry, I’ve got your back! I present to you my top ten house party themes! These themed nights are always successful and ones to be remembered. My top ten are easy and accessible on a student budget too, so why not give one a go?!

1. The abba night

This night is an absolute classic and is always a success. Put on some excellent Abba tunes and dress the Mamma Mia part! Everyone will be boogieing and bringing out their cracking dance moves. Outfits for this night can be done easily by students – just borrow your friend’s dungarees, find some funky glasses and put a piece of fabric in your hair to make a 70s style hairband.

2. anything but cups

This is a super entertaining theme as you watch your friends drink out of vessels which cannot be the classic cup. It’s a great chance to get creative as you drink from anything but cups. Some ideas could be water pistols, flower pots or even wellies!

3. festival

This theme is really fun, especially in the summer when you can easily pretend you’re hosting a festival! Wear your best flower crown, bring out some summery tunes and drinks and wear your sunnies 😎

4. Anything but clothes

This one is super easy for a student budget, and also perfect to see your friends’ creative minds at work! Think stapling bin bags together, beer cans together or using a curtain! It’s definitely one for the laughs.

5. Bond Night

This is a great opportunity to bring out the wine and a cheese board and to dress up classy in your high heels and suits! Not to mention the amazing decorations you can use to cover your house – I’m looking at you glitter curtains.

6. toga party

This is a really cheap and creative theme. Every student has a bed sheet lying around (and if not they’re really cheap from Primark) which I’m sure they will want to make use of and turn into a beautiful classical toga! Make sure everyone turns up suitably dressed and take lots of pictures – this is a night to remember when you’re all dressed in togas!

7. traffic light party

This is a perfect one for setting up single friends at a party. It’s really simple: wear green if you’re single, amber/orange if it’s complicated and red to say ‘I’m taken’

8. Neon UV party

This is another fun one… even if it’s slightly messy! Turn the lights off in your house and give your guests UV paint, glitter and glowsticks! Your photos will look really cool with the funky neon lights.

9. Fairytale

This is an open opportunity to dress up as any characters from the land of far far away. From disney princesses to Shrek, this one will be right laugh and turn your house into a world of fairytale.

And Finally,

10. costume based on the first letter of your name

This theme is a super creative one and there are lots of options for costumes. Ask each person coming to your party to dress as something based on the first letter of their name. From Emily the Elephant to Sophie the spoon, so much variety of choice!
