Remembrance Day

This Sunday we paid tribute to the members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty. Ceremonies were held and poppies were worn at local war memorials all over the country, with a two-minute silence to mark Armistice Day. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh attended the Festival of Remembrance, held at the Royal Albert Hall, as part of a three-day commemoration of Britain’s war dead. Among the many tribute performers this year was an all-new girl group, handpicked from a search for talent across forces families, The Poppy Girls, debuting their new single The Call (No Need To Say Goodbye). The single will be raising money for the Poppy Appeal, and costs £1.49 as a single on iTunes.

Typhoon Haiyan Hits the Philippines

Super-storm Haiyan passed through the country on Friday, leaving more than 120 dead and many more injured. One of the most powerful storms recorded to make landfall, Haiyan caused landslides, destroyed entire buildings and cut-off communications from some of the worst hit areas in the country. Schools and offices were closed, and transport and local flights were temporarily suspended. Military relief efforts have however already begun.

BT Sport Win Champions League Deal

A £900 million pound deal will end two decades of Champions League football on terrestrial TV. BT Sport has been in talks with UEFA, and has revealed that it has won the rights to broadcast Champions League and Europa League matches from the year 2015 until 2018. This will be a big blow to both Sky and ITV, who currently share the rights having lost out to a channel that was only launched this year.
