Autumn is my favourite season of the year. I love the beautiful colours, cosy clothes, rainy days, and all the fun, festive activities you can do. More importantly, autumn marks the transition between summer and winter. It is all about change. The change in weather, the change in colours and the changing leaves. This is the perfect time for couples to embrace this change and experience it together. Within this article, I want to explore the range of autumnal date ideas you can do with your partner so you can make the most of this stunning season.
My TikTok for you page is constantly flooded with videos of the autumnal aesthetic, showing off this season’s fashion trends, coffee orders and Halloween ideas (I’ll come back to that next week!) I love celebrating this festive season because it gives me something to look forward to, and I’m also a sucker for the colder weather, so this time of year is perfect for me, and I can’t wait to make the most of it with my boyfriend.
Interestingly, autumn is a significant season for us hormonally, making your desire to spend time with your partner even greater. Studies have shown that during the autumn, as the air changes and the temperature drops, sex drives increase as the testosterone levels in men and women peak. This is because, through evolution, the colder seasons are ideal for fertilisation and mating, and during the spring and summer, birth rates increase, as we can see within other species such as sheep. Testosterone enhances sexual interest and increases the frequency of sexual acts and nocturnal erections. Typically, sperm concentration is lowest during the summer because of the heat and increases as the weather cools. Therefore, high testosterone levels, high sperm count, and high fertility can all lead to a peak in sexual desire. It has even been speculated that the smell of pumpkin and other odours can also trigger arousal in men. In a study it was found that the smell of pumpkin pie and lavender increased the penile blood flow by 40%! So, autumn really is the sexiest time of the year!
This rise in libido is ideal for making the most of this season with your partner, as it gives us the perfect excuse to stay inside, get cosy and hibernate with each other. Watching movies together is a perfect autumn date idea. The decline in temperature increases our desire for emotional warmth, leading to a greater interest in snuggling up with your partner and watching romantic movies. I find that Bridget Jones is the ideal autumn movie, with its theme of winter, love and lust. Although it’s not a romantic movie, Harry Potter is another autumn classic, as well as The Devil Wears Prada and Little Women being up there! So, get yourself a warm blanket, light some pumpkin pie and lavender scented candles ;) and get under the covers to embrace each other on these cold, dark, rainy autumnal evenings.
Additionally, another one of my favourite autumn date ideas is going for a romantic, scenic walk in nature. Walking with your partner, hand in hand, amongst the trees and their falling leaves, with the fresh air brushing against your face, is an incomparable experience. Not only is it a good chance to stretch your legs, get your heart rate up and get some exercise outside, but it’s also a perfect chance to catch up with your partner, away from any distractions or screens, and really talk with each other. It gives you a chance to appreciate one another, and to spend true quality time together away from the noise and stress of everyday life. Going to a nature reserve, such as Barley Valley, which is only 2.2 miles away from Exeter, or going for a stroll in the Moors, is a great autumnal activity to do with your partner. The combination of the beautiful golden colours, the crisp air, and spending time together is faultless.
Similarly, another classic autumnal date idea is a trip to Pennywell Farm. This is one of those experiences I see all over my TikTok. Although I haven’t been yet, it is definitely something I plan to do. Visiting a farm such as this is a great date idea, as you can feed the pigs, meet some goats and see the pumpkin patch. What could be better for an autumnal afternoon?
Finally, my favourite night of the season is bonfire night. I just love getting all wrapped up, scarves, hats, and big coats, and gathering around with everyone on a cold, autumn night. That sense of community and togetherness is so special, and spending that festive night with someone you care about makes it even better.
Other date ideas include:
- Coffee dates
- Carving pumpkins
- Baking together
- Watching a scary movie
- Autumnal arts and crafts
The list of autumnal date ideas is endless. I hope I have helped you see the beauty in autumn, and how it is a chance to appreciate this season with your partner, feel the romance and embrace each other.
