Suited and Booted? What to Wear to an Interview

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

As we all know it’s around the time when interviews for internships, work experience and even jobs are here. Yes, it’s daunting thinking about what questions they may throw at you in the interview, but don’t overlook the important question – what to wear!?

And so, HCX brings you a simple guide to dressing the part for an interview… we hope it helps you to look the part in your quest for a job!

Corporate Classics:

For business’ or large companies, keep the look basic and conservative (After the first interview you can gauge how to alter your look for any second and third interviews too, but it’s important to remain professional if it’s a formal establishment).

HCX recommends a suit – a smart jacket with trousers or a skirt is perfect. Although there are many new exciting ways to decorate our nails, keep them manicured and the colour neutral or bare.

HCX suggests going to Zara and Mango to find these corporate classics, and Barry M does a great selection of nail varnishes.

Business Casual:

If you’re through to a second interview, dependent on where you’re interviewing you may have the opportunity to dress down whilst still maintaining a smart look. Top tip: For these types of companies you can never look too smart, still stick to simple colours e.g black, white and grey.

HerCampus recommend Zara, Mango and Topshop, but have a look at Aldo for the perfect shoes!

Dress down day, every day:

If you’re interviewing at a place where the usual attire is jeans and a blouse, don’t over dress. This will show that you understand the company’s culture. Wear something that you are comfortable to work in and keep it work appropriate – just remember to look presentable!

For this look, think practical. Look for useful items which can be used long term from Marks and Spencer, Next and Gap.

The Devil wears Prada:

If your aim is a job in the fashion industry, what you wear is integral. It’s all about dressing the part. Still keep a polished and professional look, but steer away from the full on corporate look.

HCX recommends you team a statement smart item with something more fun e.g a chic blouse, great belt or handbag. “One is never over-dressed or underdressed with a Little Black Dress.” – Karl Lagerfeld.

Professionals recommend wearing one, and only one statement piece like patent pumps and a bold necklace or watch.

For this look, HerCampus recommends having fun with items from Topshop and Asos and get yourself a fabulous Michael Kors watch.

HCX wishes you luck on your future interviews and careers – If at first you don’t succeed try, try again.
