Saving money when eating on campus

The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus.
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

If, like me, you are motivated by food, coming onto campus can be very costly unless you bring food from home. The cost of buying food on campus is getting even more expensive and with the price of a meal deal in Marketplace going up to £4.65 (I can’t believe it!) I’ve made it my mission to find out how best to save money on campus.

Where to find the microwaves on our Streatham campus

Bulk cooking food at home and bringing it in to reheat is by far the most cost-effective way of getting a hot meal on campus. I went around our Streatham campus to see where all the microwaves were.

Queen’s Building

The café at queens sells by far the best pastries on campus. But did you know that hidden away in the corner is a microwave station? There’s a microwave, a kettle and even a workstation, so you’re not shoved into a little desk.

Harrison

Harrison’s café, the engine room (no pun intended, apparently), has an absolutely gorgeous and modern feel to it. If you can brace walking all the way up forum hill to reach it, then it’s definitely worth paying it a visit. There is not only one microwave but two, meaning that you can have lunch together with a friend.

Building One

Building One’s microwave is located in the La Touché café AKA the HCX article planning hub! Why not bring some lunch to our next planning session?

Amory

If you don’t fancy walking up forum hill to microwave your food, then look no further than the Amory building. Whether you’re pulling an all-nighter in the library or have an awkward hour break in between seminars, then you’re in the right place. The microwave is just in the study area next to the cafe.

Peter Chalk

Like harrison, Peter Chalk is annoingly at the top of campus but it does at least have microwaves to give you some extra energy after a long hike to the top of the hill. There are two microwaves and a sink, which is perfect for that study group session you’ve been planning all term.

Devonshire house

Our students guild really does have everything, and hidden away upstairs in DH2 is a microwave and sink combo waiting for you! Just head to DH2 and keep walking through the chairs and it will be on your right.

Other money saving hacks on campus

Not everyone is able to bring their own food from home so here are some other ways to save (some) money whilst on campus

  • Thanks to the £2 meal deal campaign, the super savour kitchen now offers a £2 dish of the day, which is available from the pop up kitchen on the first floor of Devonshire House from 11am – 2:30pm, Monday to Friday.
  • If you want to have some food when you’re at our next HCX article planning then you can try the £2.99 Super Savour menu in La Touche – they have really good jacket potatoes!
  • Most of the Cafes on campus serve BARiSCA hot drinks and they have a loyalty card, which gets you the offer – buy four get your fifth FREE.
  • In Cornwall house (the Lemon Grove building), they offer 20% off iSCA EATS pizza every day between 3pm & 5pm (in store only).
