The Reality of Nail Art Tutorials

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

With flaming golden colour palettes and Halloween approaching, autumn is the perfect time for experimenting with your nails – autumnal shades, cute designs, and spooky pumpkins and broomsticks. There is a never ending amount of choice of nail art for you to spice up your nails with this autumn.

So we’ve all been there. You see some amazing nail art on Instagram, click on the tutorial, and see it can be achieved in only four simple steps. What could possibly go wrong?

Here at Her Campus Exeter we decided to try out a “simple” Halloween nail tutorial, which would be perfect for any of your Halloween plans and parties. We found this undeniably cute skeleton themed nail look that we were dying to try out for ourselves. Here’s the look we decided to (try) and copy. (by ‘simplenailartdesigns’ on Instagram).

Looks easy enough, right?

First things first, we applied a simple white base coat. Then it was time to add a “curved and vertical line” at the edges.

They may kind of look like black splodges rather than the edge of the skull shape, but they’re not awful

With step two it was time to add the mouth. Unfortunately with no nail art tools to hand, we resorted to using the nail polish brush and just hoped for the best…

There really are no words. We don’t know what this looks like, but it’s most certainly NOT a skull’s mouth.

Moving on, we then tried adding the eyes and nose whilst desperately hoping it would start to look more like a skull.

How hard can it be to draw two black dots for eyes

Very hard, apparently. Plus by now, the nail varnish was a bit gloopy so it ended up having weird hair-like lines across the nails , ruining all our “fabulous” work.

Don’t even get us started on the nose. An “upside down heart” shape is an impossible task.

So while we had our our hearts set on achieving a scarily adorable design that should have looked like this:

We ended up, with something a little more like this

Mission complete. We can’t even tell the difference…
