Our Shared Shelf: The New Feminist Book Club

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

As a general rule for any uni student, reading lists aren’t much fun. Sure, you probably love your subject, you want to learn about it, but faced with page after page of bibliography? Not so much. Reading becomes a chore. In 2016, however, HCX favourite and general amazing person Emma Watson might be able to distract you with some books that are interesting, intelligent, and so much more.

Since becoming UN GoodWill Ambassador for Women, Emma Watson has done a lot of reading. As a result, she’s come up with a fab idea to get people involved with the kind of books that are, in her own words, “funny, inspiring, sad, though-provoking, empowering!”

To make this happen, on 7th January, Emma announced via Twitter that she would be launching a Feminist book club under the name of ‘Our Shared Shelf’, a suggestion from one of her followers. She explains that: “The plan is to select and read a book every month, then discuss the work during the month’s last week (to give everyone time to read it!). I will post some questions/quotes to get things started, but I would love for this to grow into an open discussion with and between you all. Whenever possible I hope to have the author, or another prominent voice on the subject, join the conversation.”

The first book to be chosen and discussed for the month of January, is Gloria Steinem’s 2015 title, My Life on the Road. Steinem is a long-celebrated feminist author, journalist and activist, and the book follows her life as a young woman living ‘on the road’. The book, like the title of the club itself, was chosen from suggestions made on Twitter.

Anyone and everyone is encouraged by Emma to sign up, get reading and discuss the book with other readers. If you want to get involved yourself, (and I certainly will be!), head to the GoodReads site.
