A New Year is a perfect excuse to mix up your day-to-day Uni life. It’s easy to fall into a rut of spending your time either procrastinating in the Forum library or forgetting your nights in TP. So, Her Campus Exeter is here to help you inject a bit of culture into your Uni experience with 5 ways to become more cultured in Exe…

  1. The Picture House:

This alternative to the Vue or Odeon is located close to Walkabout on the site of a 1930’s bus garage. The Picture House offers you the chance to expand your film repertoire from big blockbusters, to include less well-known, arty films. It already screens opera and ballet broadcasts, but in the next few months it will also be showing live theatre broadcasts as part of a world-wide National Theatre scheme. No need to travel to the West End in London to see the greatest plays, soon you’ll be able to watch live theatre from the comfort of this cosy venue in Exeter.

  1. Exeter’s Underground Passages:

Few people are aware of the maze of underground passages running below the high street. Yet, at just £5 a ticket you can don a helmet and crawl through these subterranean passages built in the medieval period. Created in 14thC to bring clean water into the city, these tunnels are a fun, unconventional way to get a glimpse of Exeter’s history. Over the years there’s even been reported paranormal activity, with people claiming they’ve seen the ghost of a man who once died in the tunnels. Spooky.

  1. The Bike Shed Theatre:

Another underground gem, this time situated opposite Walkabout, is the Bike Shed Theatre. There are theatrical performances on most nights in its 60 seat auditorium and an eclectic mix of DJs playing every weekend in the vintage cocktail bar. This intimate space is a great alternative to Saturday Lemmy. Even better, if you’re really strapped for cash, you can volunteer at the Bike Shed and see the shows free of charge.

  1. Northcott Theatre:

We are lucky enough to have Devon’s biggest theatre on our very own campus, hosting dance, opera, music and comedy shows from across Devon. It is also involved in the University’s Art & Culture Strategy attempting to make cultural activities more easily available to all its students and regularly puts on University theatre productions.

Watch out for:

University of Exeter’s Footlight Society’s performance of Copacabana– showing from Wed 23rd to Sat 26th January.

The basic storyline: a young singer arrives in New York hoping to hit the big time and gets a job at Copacabana nightclub. This musical promises an “extravaganza” of showgirls, gangsters and romance.

  1. RAMM:

The Royal Albert Memorial Museum includes exhibitions from the British Museum and National Portrait Gallery. Just like the Picture House, RAMM proves you don’t need to travel to London to get a taste of real culture. This is a chance to see Exeter’s global connections, with world cultural displays and exotic animals. Visit it once: at the very least you can convince yourself you know a bit about Exeter’s history.

With these 5 options, you can take 2012 as an opportunity to change your routine and become the New “Cultured” You!
