Christmas is THE time to get the craft box out and make something festive. Something about the Christmas period just makes me want to craft. The perfect Sunday would be sitting around the table with my friends, some Christmas music playing, in our woolly knit jumpers, doing a fun craft. I have shared my favourite 10 below, so that we can all enjoy and unwind as the weather gets colder, and our houses get cosier.

Snowflake banners

The perfect, extremely effective banner to adorn your house this Christmas!

What you will need:

  • A pack of cotton buds
  • Runny glue
  • White wool
  1. Stick 5 cotton buds together in the centre, so that they are each pointing out, creating a star shape
  2. Bend 5 cotton buds almost in half and stick them at the end of each out-pointing cotton bud to create a snowflake and let it dry
  3. Wrap one long piece of wool around the entire snowflake.
  4.  Once you are left with the end of the wool thread it through some of the attached wool so that it is secure and then you can either tie a loop which will create a singular snowflake ornament, or you can tie the snowflake to a long piece of wool and attach others to create a banner.

Initial baubles

Simple, personalised baubles to hang on your Christmas tree!

What you will need:

  • A piece of cardboard
  • Coloured wool
  1. Cut your initial out of the cardboard. You can make it as big or as little as you would like.
  2. Using your wool, wrap generously around your initial. I recommend wrapping at least 2 layers around to ensure your wool is secure.
  3. Using the end bit of wool, tie a loop that you can use to hang your initial.

Fairy Light Jars

These jars look so magical in the corner of a room!

What you will need:

  • A jar (up to you what size you would like)
  • Battery fairy lights (I recommend warmer tones)
  • Glass writing markers (preference)
  1. Stuff the fairy lights into the jar, leaving the battery outside to be placed behind the jar for ease of turning on and off.
  2. You can decorate the jars if you would like with glass-writing markers to add another dimension to your jars. This is very effective!

Golden stars

This is such a simple craft, yet looks super effective hanging down a wall, or as a banner.

What you will need:

  • Golden card
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Thin/invisible string
  1. Cut lots of stars out of the golden card – I recommend using a template so that they are all uniform. You will need 2 stars to make 1 complete star, so bear that in mind when cutting them out.
  2. Cut out a long piece of string and stretch it out so that is it easier to glue stars onto it.
  3. Glue one side of the star and attach to the string, ensuring the gold side if facing outwards.
  4. The attach the other side of the star to make one complete star with string running through the middle.
  5. Repeat these steps, gradually making your way down the piece of string until you are left with a banner of stars which you can either hang vertically or horizontally, both are equally as effective.

Felt baubles

Very cute, but requires a bit more precision and focus than the other crafts!

What you will need:

  • Felt (any colour of your choosing)
  • Colourful thread (in a few different colours of your choosing)
  • Scissors
  1. Cut out a bauble-shaped piece of felt.
  2. Using the thread, sew patterns of your choosing into the bauble to create a patterned bauble effect.
  3. Using a piece of thread, create a loop at the top of the bauble to enable it to hang on the Christmas tree.

Cardboard gingerbread houses

A really detailed and effective craft that looks brilliant on the mantelpiece.

What you will need:

  • Cardboard
  • Runny glue with a needle tip applicator
  • Scissors
  1. Cut the outline of a gingerbread house from the cardboard.
  2. Draw your desired decorations using the glue on the cardboard to create a gingerbread house effect and let it dry!

Stuffed felt star/heart keyring

A fab handmade keyring that adds a bit of colour to your keys!

What you will need:

  • Felt (any colour of your choosing)
  • Stuffing
  • Thread (I recommend using a few colours to make your keyring look extra impressive!)
  • Scissors
  1. Cut out 2 sides of your star/heart out of the felt, making sure to leave half a centimetre around the edge which will be used to sew the edges together.
  2. Decorate your star/heart using thread in any pattern of your choosing, making sure that once you have finished sewing you knot the thread on the inside of the felt where you won’t be able to see it, and not the outside where you have decorated.
  3. Begin to sew the two sides together, looping around the edges of your star/heard to create neat stitches.
  4. Leave a 2-finger-width hole unsewed so that you can now add the stuffing to your keyring.
  5. Sew up the hole and ensure a tight knot so that the stuffing is secure inside.
  6. Using your thread, create a loop at the top of the keyring so that you can attach it to your keys. I recommend threading through a few times to make your loop at least 3 threads thick so that it is more secure.

Window art

A really fun drawing-based craft to decorate your windows this Christmas.

What your will need:

  • A window!
  • Glass-drawing pens
  1. Using your pens, unleash your inner creativity and draw a Christmassy scene. Just a bit of snow and some gingerbread houses looks super effective!

Pom pom ornament

Such a cute ornament, and so easy to make!

What you will need:

  • Cardboard
  • Wool
  • Scissors
  • String
  1. Cut 2 uniform ring/bagel shapes out of the cardboard.
  2. Put the 2 rings on top of each other, thread the wool through the hole and tie a knot.
  3. Then continue to wrap the wool around the ring and continue until you can no longer see the hole in the centre.
  4. Separate the wool, put the scissors in between the two bits of cardboard and cut around the outward ring
  5. Get another piece of wool, thread it in between the two rings of cardboard and double knot it so that it is secure.
  6. Slice the cardboard so that you can remove it easily and then create a loop using the piece of wool that you double knotted so that you can hang your pom pom!

Wire Christmas tree

Super simple and cute decoration!

What you will need:

  • A piece of wire
  • Wool (preferably green)
  • Scissors
  1. Twist a piece of wire so that it forms a Christmas tree shape. I would do this by curling the wire around something cylindrical and then adjusting it to make the top area thinner and the bottom half wider, echoing the Christmas tree shape.
  2. Wrap the wool around the wire continuously, I recommend doing this a few times so that the wool is secure.
  3. Tuck the end of the wool into a part that you wrapped and make sure that it is secure.

I hope that, if you give one of these crafts a go this Christmas, you get as much joy as I did out of them! Have fun with them and share them with your friends so that everyone can have a go crafting. It’s such an enjoyable, relaxing way to unwind, especially with how busy it gets this time of the year!

Hi! I'm Emily Thrower and I am a second year English and Communications student :)

I am obsessed with fashion, love a long dog walk, and although you never need to convince me to go on a night out, I will be SAT at 8pm every Tuesday to watch the Bake Off with a cup of tea in hand like clockwork.

I really enjoy writing essays- I know, it shocked me too!!, and have always wanted to explore the magazine journalism industry. I am so excited to be the Health and Lifestyle editor for Her Campus this year, and am even more excited to be writing surrounded by such a welcoming group of women!
