Mothers Day Gift Guide 2013

SUNDAY 10TH MARCH GUYS AND GIRLS (especially guys, who I know are reading this, as it’ll be the male students who are not only more likely to forget this important day in their Ma’s year, but also struggle most with what to get for them…) To save you checking your diaries to see how soon that is, it’s this Sunday! So read on for some gift (and gesture…) inspiration…

  1. A Card

Obvious and predictable I know, but nevertheless better than nothing! So many of us are too stressed/poor/lazy (delete as appropriate) to go into town and spend some quality time with friends to find the perfect gift or bunch of flowers for our Mum, and buy an annoyingly high priced stamp/postage to send it home to arrive in time. If you really are snowed under with work or struggling with your bank account figure, don’t panic; a pretty and thoughtful card with a meaningful and heartfelt message sent from your student grotto will be hugely appreciated by the Madre. The Co-Op on Pennsylvania Road and The Forum will be selling a selection of Mother’s Day cards (and stamps) so no excuses![pagebreak]

 

  1. Flowers

Again, obvious and predictable with just a slightly bigger price tag, having flowers sent to your Mum on Mothering Sunday will make her day. The websites are idiot-proof easy to order flowers to be sent home, and almost always include a little card on which you can type a message to be printed onto to accompany the flowers, just to prove that yes you did go online onto marksandspencer.com and order a bunch of flowers instead of procrastinate on facebook whilst in the library.[pagebreak]

 

  1. Scents

It’s a set in stone convention that all Mum’s love smelly things (nice smells of course) including scented candles, sprays, creams and bubbles. John Lewis do a gorgeous selection of smelly candles which are always a great default gift. They aren’t too big or heavy either so if you aren’t heading home for the weekend and need to post your gift and card, it won’t be too expensive. The Lily-Flame and ­­Jo Malone ranges are personal favourites, but go along for a whiff yourself and choose the one you think your Mum would most love burning in her bedroom. I’m also slightly biased towards Cath Kidston who have compiled a little selection of gift ideas for Mothers Day, all of which I think are slightly outside a student’s budget. Affordable ideas though, are these bath melts and blossom hand cream, both at just £8.00 with glorious English rosy scents.[pagebreak]

 

  1. Cooking attire

Now, I mentioned this in my Christmas gift guide for Mothers, but I want to point again as I did before, be careful with this one. My Mum sports a strop if she receives any gift at any time of year that has anything to do with aprons, wooden spoons, cook books, or generally anything that’s come from Lakeland, as she claims it makes her feel like she belongs in the kitchen. I know many other Mums though who love being it the kitchen, and I’ve thought up a few ideas that you could send your Mum’s way if she is this way inclined. Cath Kidston do a really cute jam making kit and John Lewis do this wackily designed apron which is a personal favourite! For those Mums who love baking cakes, these cupcake cases from Lakeland are adorable and I’m this close to going and buying them myself…[pagebreak]

 

  1. Food and Drink

I for one know that if I had a day dedicated to me, this would be at the top of my list… Everyone loves some indulgent nosh every once in a while, be it some extravagant chocolate from Hotel Chocolate or some Veuve Cliquot champagne (if youre feeling generous…). Even better, if you’re thinking of being the best daughter/son in the world and heading home for the weekend to surprise your Ma for her special day, why not cook up a storm for her, be it breakfast in bed or a nice dinner. Simple ingredients and recipe ideas go a long way, for example a Spaghetti Carbonara or Fajitas, all yummy comfort food which I’m sure would be hugely appreciated.

Georgia is in her third year at Exeter studying English and French Law. Last year she headed the Culture team as Local Culture editor, informing all of our lovely readers about the best events and places to explore in this beautiful city. She may have taken off her cultural clogs, but she is still heavily involved in Her Campus Exeter, leading the team as joint President with Florence Christie this year.When she isn’t slaving away at French law, or updating her Tumblr of pretty pictures stolen from other more committed bloggers, she can be spotted in the Forum sipping a hazlenut laté, whilst feeling guilty for said indulgence and Instagramming pictures of Costa cups. When day turns to night, Monday Arena is generally a favourite haunt or when she is feeling particularly edgy you may find her by the quayside at Cellar Door embracing her inner Cara Delvigne- thougbts of Costa on her mind! Although she never says no to a night in with her girls, watching chick flicks- preferably involving Ed Westwick.At the end of this year,  Georgia will continue to pursue her career as a lawyer, saying goodbye to rainy Britain and Bonjour to très chic France, where she will be completing the final year of her degree. Continuing to follow her mantra of work hard play hard, I wouldn’t be surprised if in in no time this girl could give Legally Blonde Elle Brooks a run for her money.
