Whether you’re a seasoned fourth year or a brand spanking-new fresher, your ideal night out will probably consist of hitting one of Exeter’s high-end establishments with your friends, and then piling your(more-than-merry)selves into a taxi at the end of the night.

But girls, let’s face it, this is not always the case. More often than we would like (or can understand), we lose track of every single person we came out with and are left alone in the club. So how safe do you feel when faced with a journey home, alone, in the city of Exeter? HCX took to the streets (and by streets we mean the forum) to find out what you ladies make of this tricky situation.

Our first girl Hettie was very positive: “I feel so safe, I’ll walk home by myself at like 3 in the morning! I think it’s because there’s just students everywhere.”

However we did speak to some girls that were a little bit worried that they feel so invincible when they’ve had a drink too many. Leanne said “I do feel really safe but I don’t think I should think like that, you never know what could happen.”

The next girl we hijacked mid forum-rush was Fran, and told us that she’s “walked home numerous times on my own when I probably shouldn’t have, but one of my female housemates has been mugged on her way home. Usually if I’m worried I’ll call someone to have a chat while I walk home.”Fran has a good point, that if you do feel uncomfortable it is a good idea to ring someone and let them know you’re on your way home, just for your friends’ peace of mind.

Our next girl Bethany has a similar opinion, and touches on the idea of utilising the kind hearts of fellow students. She said “I’ve never had any cause to feel unsafe in any of Exeter’s nightclubs – I’ve often found that people are willing to walk you home if you’ve managed to lose your friends!”

So there we have it girls. It doesn’t look like we should have any severe panic attacks if we’re left as billy-no-mates in a club, but HCX does have a couple of suggestions if this does happen. Don’t ever leave the club by yourself if you feel unsafe or are in a bad way. There will always be someone around that can help you, and it is always better to get a (licensed) taxi home than it is to walk alone. Have fun and stay safe girls!
