How to Get Motivated

We’ve all well and truly reached that time in the term when motivation is a real struggle. With the Easter holidays very much in sight, essays and lectures are just in the way, and sitting in the library all day seems far from appealing. But pushing through is definitely worth it, and Her Campus Exeter have some top tips for you to motivate yourself through the final hurdle and still have a great end of term!

1. Be Organised

It may seem obvious, but being organised keeps your mind clear and ready to get working. Make a plan for the day and stick to it. Don’t just leave the day free for ‘essay’, plan different sections to keep your mind engaged. Make sure you have the books, papers and pens you need, a clear working area and are free of distractions, after just one more check of facebook….

2. Schedule in Breaks

When has working 9-5 non stop in the library ever worked? It doesn’t. So don’t even hesitate about setting yourself breaks. Try working for 1.5 hours solidly (of course with snacks and water at hand) and then give yourself 45 mins to an hour off, then repeat a couple more times. That will mean you get around 5 hours of work done in one day with plenty of time off- much preferred to spending all day with no chance for a costa gossip!

3. Keep it in Perspective

If you are setting goals, being organised and working when you tell yourself to, you are doing so well. There is no need to have a panic, keep things in perspective and remember to enjoy things- maybe even remind yourself why you chose to study your course!

4. Reward Yourself

Oh yes, I’m generally thinking chocolate here, but we can also go more large scale. Try combining breaks with treats, maybe a coffee or treat break to get something tasty from the forum. Or promise yourself a good film in the evening, a shop at the weekend or a night out. Some people even make themselves a little star chart (it really works!). If you set goals you will definitely motivate yourself to do more, and won’t feel guilty gouging into that galaxy bar.

5. Be Positive

Be the person that says everything is ok, and you will do it. Be calm and get excited about what you’re going to achieve. Potential jobs, fun after exams, holidays, lie ins…it’ll all be worth it in the end! Surround yourself with positive people and good friends, chat to family members and others to remember there is more to life than just work.

6.  Don’t be Afraid to Make Mistakes

As close as we come girls, we aren’t always perfect, but that’s ok! Just remember that we are still learning, and you can’t be super organised and on schedule every day. If you really need a day off, don’t worry about it. If you realise you’ve read the wrong article, oh well, keep calm, at least you can learn from that mistake!

7. Oh, and You Can Still Be Spontaneous

I promised I wouldn’t utter a hint to yolo in this article, but you really should remember that you can still have fun! Sometimes you can work better if you keep yourself busy, because you have less time to procrastinate- time is of the essence! If you’re on schedule, do enjoy yourself as much as you can!
