How to Cope with ‘Post-Travel Blues’

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

What a summer it has been! Scorching temperatures, white sandy beaches, beautiful landmarks, ancient ruins, quirky cocktail bars, and to top it all off, a Royal Baby. These are just some of the things that the girls here at HCX have been enjoying this summer. The only sad thing is that it is now all coming to an end!

It is always a sad feeling when it suddenly hits home that your travels are over, especially on arriving back in England after an exotic or adventurous trip abroad. How on earth has it gone so quickly? How is it that I am ALREADY back home? Whether you have been inter-railing around Europe, island hopping in Thailand or backpacking through South America, the Arrivals board at London Heathrow saying  ‘Welcome to London’, accompanied by a backdrop of drizzly rain on the runway, is rarely a pleasant sight. If you are returning to Uni for a year of hard work ahead, or if you have just returned from a Gap Year, the prospect of lectures, essays and timetables can be daunting. University is a great place to be, especially in Exeter where we are lucky enough to be so close to the coast, however when dwelling on previous holidays or adventures, you can’t help but wish you were still there!

Well, here at Her Campus Exeter, we want you to forget this feeling of what we personally like to call the ‘Post-Travel Blues’, and instead start to think about where it is you are going to visit next! Our new Travel section this year will be providing you with some interesting and useful information about travelling the world, both to near and far away places! We will be offering you tips for places to go, things to see, and most importantly, inspiring you to travel and experience the world as students! We are blessed at University to have such long extensive holidays, and therefore why not use some of this time off to widen your perspective of the world?

Planning ahead and doing your research can be an exciting past-time at university. Try visiting the local STA Travel store in Exeter and see what deals they have to offer. Many students can grab some excellent deals on flights here and it can set you something to aim for and look forward to on the horizon. Or why not open up a ‘Trailfinders Account’. If you have an important birthday coming up, or are stuck for ideas for Christmas presents, Trailfinders can set you up an account where people can deposit money as gifts which can then contribute to planning an upcoming trip abroad.

Watch this space, and let’s stop dwelling on the fact that summer is over! It’s time to plan your next adventure!

Connie is a BA Geography student in her third year at Exeter University, and is  also a deputy Travel Editor for Her Campus Exeter. Connie discovered her passion for travel when she was just 13 years old during a 4 month school exchange programme to Christchurch in New Zealand. Since then she has developed a love for discovering more of the world and on her gap year she was lucky to travel to both Africa and South-East Asia, and next on her ambitious list is to visit South America. She will hopefully be able to contribute well to the Her Campus Exeter Travel team! At university Connie enjoys spending quality time with her friends, and is a great fan of trying and testing different cuisines and restaurants, despite being a rather poor cook herself. She enjoys playing sport socially such as netball, tennis and hockey, but has never possessed the competitiveness and aggression needed to be a top player in either of these! Something she is keen to pursue however is learning to speak Spanish, which she is currently studying alongside her Geography degree at university.  After university Connie plans to work within the Marketing and PR sector, having always had an interest in working with large scale brands in both the beauty and travel sector.
