HCX Travel: Top Festivals Part One: Ireland

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

Here at Her Campus we have already started planning our summer holidays, from beach breaks to cultural quick stop tours. For all you music lovers out there, we have some profiles of the best festivals to help you decide which one is for you! This week we are starting with the top three Irish Festivals. With the most underrated festivals in the UK, Ireland is so close and provides some of the most unique festival experiences…

Three: Electric Picnic

When? 29th – 31st August 2014

Where? Stradbally Estate, Co.Laois

How Much? Prices still have not been released as of yet, but here’s hoping it won’t be too expensive

Who? The line-up has not been revealed yet, but last year saw acts headlining such as Fat Boy Slim, Bjork and Arctic Monkeys

Highlights: Highlights from last year include sets from Disclosure, Wu Tang Crew and Franz Ferdinand. Last year videographer Barry Knight, filmed the entire festival from a first person perspective – so you can experience the highlights for yourself!

Awards: Last year Picnic scored three awards at the Irish Festival Awards – Best Large Festival, Best Lineup and Family Festival – awards which they are not keen to let go of for 2014!

Since 2014 is it’s 10th birthday we are expecting some exciting things from the Irish festival.

Two: Longitude

When? 18th – 20th July 2014

Where? Marlay Park

How Much? Weekend Tickets –  €149.50 and Day Passes – €59.50

Who? With the line up being announced only earlier this month, bands such as Bombay Bicycle Club, Icona Pop, George Ezra, Chvrches, Sam Smith and Roosevelt are on their way to Ireland, with more set to be released soon!

Highlights: Last year saw the first Longitude festival, with highlights such as Phoenix performing an epic eight minute ‘Sunskrupt!’, Foals performing and Vampire Weekend starting off the festival with the ever so bouncy ‘Cousins’. Irish media universally praised the festival for the Glastonbury like vibes. Check out some more of the 2013 highlights here

One: Castlepalooza

When? 1st – 3rd August 2014

Where? Charleville Castle, Tullamore… Set in a 17th century castle, hidden away in Ireland’s oldest primordial oak woods, Castlepalooza may remind Exeter students of our very own Enchanted Garden Ball or maybe the Christmas law ball?! With a 2,500 capacity, the festival offers a unique experience allowing visitors to explore the castle on site and discover events inside, such as burlesque performers and fortune tellers

How Much? Ticket prices range from €64 to €109 for regular camping, and boutique camping ranges from €255 to €445.

Who? The line-up has not been released yet, but with previous acts such as Bolts, CYMBALS, Two Charming Men and NOT YOUR GIRLFRIEND leading the way in 2013 – the indie / new wave festival has loads of up and coming Irish talent to check out!

Highlights: Since its establishment in 2006, many artists have graced the castle such as Sister Sledge (I know, right!), Naughty by Nature, Ghostpoet and The Charlatans! If you want to check out last year’s highlights, click here.

The festival embraces the culture clash of the natural surroundings of the castle and the electronic beats to provide one of the best three days that a festival junkie will find!
