HCX Travel: City Guide to Singapore

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

Whilst the bitterly cold winter continues to torture us daily with constant rain and icy wind, the tropical paradise of Singapore seems like a faraway dream.

As soon as you step off the plane at Changi airport, you are immediately engulfed in balmy tropical heat, blistering sun (when it’s not Monsoon season that is!) and vibrant bougainvilleas. The plush greenery of swaying palm trees alongside the straights of Johor are a welcome sight, banishing thoughts of cold winter nights firmly from your memory.

Singapore may be located in South-East Asia, but this multicultural cosmopolitan city is a bustling hub catering to your every delight; be it strolling along the sands at Sentosa, exhilarating rides at Universal studios or even sampling some of the most amazing street food imaginable, Singapore has it all! We have therefore complied, our six favourite attractions that you must experience when visiting this tropical island.

1) If you love to stroll around shopping malls and drool over designer brands, then Orchard Road is surely where you will find your oasis. With every brand imaginable all ensconced within coolly refreshing air-conditioned shopping malls, saving your hair from the humidity; Orchard Road is a haven for all shopaholics. There are also many street vendors who could whip up an exotic fresh fruit juice to quench your thirst, or tempt you into trying a tasty treat during your expeditions!

2) One of the most exciting and unique tourist attractions in Singapore is the Night Safari. Whilst the Singapore zoo is magnificent, the Night Safari takes your zoo experience one step further. Have you ever imagined what it would be like after dark in the zoo? The Singapore Night Safari allows you to explore the nocturnal animals up close and personal, whilst also exploring the tropical rainforest under the cover of darkness!

3) Singapore is a multi-cultural city and one of the best-known secrets of this city is the eclectic, filled with culture, colour and mouth wateringly delicious food. From Little India; where you will eat the most delicious curries outside of India, and pursue the beautiful saris in the wet market to Chinatown; with its traditional shop houses decorated with lanterns and the beautiful Buddha Tooth Temple. With so many different cultures, you can spend hours wandering around the crowded streets of Serangoon road and sample Singapore’s famous Chilli Crab along South Bridge Road.

4) One visit that will definitely be memorable is a visit to Sentosa Island. It is one stop on the MRT (like our underground) from Vivo City, Harbour Front and literally has so many options from visiting the largest aquarium, to water parks and Singapore’s own Universal Studios. If however, thrill seeking roller coasters and water slides are not your thing, head over to Tangjong Beach where you can relax in spacious cabanas, leisurely drinking cocktails and enjoying the balmy weather and sandy beach.

5) Since Marina Bay Sands has been built it has topped numerous “Must Sees” for Singapore. With an unimaginable infinity pool, over looking the historic marina to views scanning with Garden by the Bay, Marina Bay sands is the place to go! The Ku De Ta bar and club, perched on the roof has glorious panoramic views of the Singapore skyline. Marina Bay Sands also hosts an indoor fibre optic ice rink, Venetian canals to take you from luxury shop to luxury shop and delicious hawker centres selling a variety of local delicacies!

6) Finally, Singapore is also known for its amazing cuisine; from hawker stalls to the most decadent restaurants, Singapore has them all! Lau Pa Sat, is one of the most iconic food attractions in Singapore. The traditional colonial building houses one of the largest eating centres in Singapore, with its famous Satay Street attracting hungry tourists from all around the world. With the most expansive array of local dishes ranging from Chilli Crab to Laska and Chicken Rice you will always leave feeling (very) satisfied!

Singapore combines its Asian culture with a cosmopolitan glamour making it a unique and fabulous city to visit in South East Asia!
