HCX Travel: Christmas Markets across the World

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

We’ve been spoiled by the Christmas market on the Cathedral Green here in Exeter, but where are the best Christmas markets in the world that certainly give our little Devon one a run for its money?

The Christkindlemarket, Chicago

Running for the 18th year, this market is a celebration of German-American culture with various entertaining acts from a brass band, choirs and designated activity days for children. Products from all over the world are sold, with a special emphasis on German trade – I’m sure you could pick up a mean Weißwürste here.

Rouen Christmas Market, France

Despite being a relatively small market with only about 40 stalls, Rouen makes our list because of its amazing location next to the beautiful Rouen Cathedral. The city itself is like something out of a Christmas film with cobbled streets, two ice rinks and generally gorgeous Frenchmen. Not one to say ‘Bah, humbug’ to.

Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt, Germany

Situated in Nuremberg’s old quarter with plenty of medieval charm, this is perhaps one of the largest markets in the world. With a separate Kinderweihnacht, a children’s market, it boasts the best of gift shopping, fine food and drink and a great day out for all the family, complete with Ferris wheel and carousel. There is a nativity scene that lines the passage between the two markets. Every year, approximately 2 million people visit the market, which has become nicknamed the ‘Little Town of Wood and Cloth’ due to the appearance of over 180 stalls.

Fira de Santa Llúcia, Barcelona, Spain

Starting in 1786, this market now boasts over 300 stalls selling the usual Christmas gifts, food, and Christmas trees. This market is famous for selling nativity scene figurines and tourists love the figure of the caganer (crapper) – a person squatting with his trousers by his ankles. They also have nativity scene contests, musical parades and a life size nativity scene.
