HCX Style Guide: Itchy Feet- What to Wear

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

Sunday 8th February will see our much loved Timepiece take on the vintage dance night that is Itchy Feet. Great music, great people and a night of energized fun.

Inspired by many a genre of music, Itchy Feet events mainly focus on the 50s era. And keeping this alive with your outfit is all part of the fun.

You can view some of the event photos on their website to have a look at what others have opted for in the past here:

Originality, creativity and an element of practicality too!

I would start with the staple of a jive music outfit. There is definitely a need for a skater skirt, no matter your movement mastery, I can assure you there will be twists and turns on the dance floor. It is no fun without a skirt flying around your waist!

A word of advice here on practicality, despite the skirt element being a fun part in constructing your spontaneous choreography. It is also likely that you’ll want to avoid spontaneous flashes of underwear to go with. I can suggest a small pair of little black cotton or lyrca shorts, cut some low-priced black leggings if need be. Whilst these aren’t the most attractive garments on their own, they’ll be a lifesaver popped on under your skirt. Especially if your feet manage to find their way above your head level!

If skirts aren’t your thing you can still rock some high-waisted shorts with a vintage print such as dogtooth or flattering pinstripes. Just make sure they’re comfortable enough to last you through the night of dancing.

A pretty blouse is a good match for your skater skirt; however some styles can understandably be impractical for a club night. Otherwise a crop top could also work for a more modern twist on the look.

Dresses are always a winner, especially if you can get your hands on a vintage number. Bright colours are a nice alternative to the more tea-dress style floral patterns, giving your outfit more of a night wear feel. The Vintage Store in Exeter’s city center is a treasure trove of vintage pieces, plus if you fall in love with an item who says you can’t wear it for occasions to come?

As for footwear, some scrunched down ankle socks paired with some plimsoles look very on point for the theme. Also they will be super comfortable and keep you dancing all night long.

If you have the time and the patience (plus a few helping hands here and there) you might want to try some impressive hairstyles with curlers, pins and a lot of hairspray. Otherwise a high ponytail works well, or a half up/half down style.

You don’t want your hair falling in your face every two minutes, so a headband is a fresh and youthful way to accessorize. Other accessories you may want to add may include a coordinating necktie.

Make-up should be as crisp as you can, so take your time with that eyeliner and make sure to use a well pigmented lipstick to complement your outfit.

So whether you go for all out vintage vibes or highlight your inspirations through your modern wardrobe have fun with it and be inventive with any clothes you may currently own!
