HCX Review: St Christopher’s Hostel at the Winston, Amsterdam

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

We’ve all faced the struggle of finding top-notch accommodation on a student budget, but the search is now over thanks to our Hostel Reviewers at HCX. St Christopher’s at the Winston in Amsterdam is nothing short of a hive of activity, both night and day, for student travellers from all over the world.  After completing a short (but sweet) Eurotrip this summer, I was pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome I experienced for the few nights that I was there.

Located on the edge of the Red Light District and just a 2-minute walk from Dam Square, St Christopher’s is ideal for holiday goers keen to experience every aspect of Amsterdam. The downstairs bar is packed with students every evening keen to let loose and have some fun. If you’re more of a Unit 1 kind of girl, just next door is the partner club, The Winston, the final stop on the Red Light District bar crawl 3 times a week.

The rooms are spacious and are decorated with an urban, artsy feel, but most importantly, they’re clean! The unique décor is a credit to fresh, up and coming, local artists. They offer a range of room types, from private doubles to roomy 8 bed shares.  I personally found sharing a room a fantastic way to meet like minded girls, with great tips and tricks for exploring Amsterdam. But don’t worry, if you like your personal space they can cater for this depending on your budget. The Beer Garden transforms into an oasis of sunshine during in the day, perfect for nursing that hangover from jägerbombs the night before. Either way you’re on the doorstep of central Amsterdam surrounded by culture, coffee shops and crepes!

Before heading off to explore the city, a free continental breakfast is available between 8-10am every morning. I recommend making the most of this on short visits, as it is so easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of the city that can result in a late lunch (and a grumbling tummy).  A cup of tea and fried eggs on toast went down a treat in the mornings, as the bar had transformed into a social hub of morning chitchat.

My past experience with hostel travel was true to the saying ‘you get what you pay for’. However, at St Christopher’s the friendly atmosphere and caring staff almost made it feel like a hotel. It was by no means a 7* star experience but it surpassed ‘cheap and cheerful’.  The laid back environment was one I felt happy to return to after a busy day or a night on the town.  If you’re ever in Amsterdam and don’t want to break the bank, check out St Christopher’s at The Winston, I thoroughly enjoyed the range of facilities and the fascinating people I stumbled upon on my travels.
