HCX Luxury Resort of the Week: Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

For one of the best underwater diving and snorkelling experiences in the world, there’s no better place than the Red Sea. And this luxury Four Seasons Resort in Egypt’s Sharm El Sheikh has the prime location. Not only are you lapping up some serious sunshine as you stare into the gorgeous desert landscape beyond you, but the Red Sea is literally right on your doorstep, and teeming with world-class coral reefs. No smelly mini buses driving you to far off diving spots; this, ladies, is the real marine deal. Just beware of those rock fish and sea urchins. Trying to ply the latter from your foot after accidentally stepping on it would not make for the ideal vacation.

If, like the HCX ladies, you’re a massive foodie, then you’re definitely in for a treat. With six stunning restaurants, ranging from Asian, Italian, Sushi, or a good ‘ol Surf & Turf – you won’t be disappointed. Two poolside restaurants allow for the ultimate lazy lunch by the water, whilst keeping things low-key. In-room dining is also available, as is dining on the beach – perfect for a special occasion, ultimate privacy, and a gorgeous view. Nerverending breakfast buffets tempt guests each morning with a choice of English and Continental breakfasts, or the resort speciality: the Bedouin breakfast. The authentic dishes in the Bedouin breakfast provide the perfect opportunity to taste the delicacies of the region, and savour the smells of the rich spices they use. But breakfast doesn’t stop there….We’re already having food-dreams about the pancakes, waffles, freshly baked muffins and pastries from their on-site bakery.

There are four pools at the resort (one of them is aptly named Aladdin!) We’re talking whirlpools, underwater music, private cabanas, stunning views of the Red Sea, and island bars for a classy cocktail when the mood takes your fancy. Although sticking to a non-alcoholic option might be wiser, to avoid accidentally misjudging the pool’s depth; we don’t want you running out with a nose-bleed. That would certainly give the “Red” sea a run for its money…

The resort has an on-site diving centre, Sinai Blues, which is located right on the beach, as well as luxury spa and fitness facilities. If you’re eager to try out new things and explore the area, there is a horseriding centre nearby where you can ride along stunning beaches, across deserts, or up mountains. Other fun excursions include taking a jetty to Tiran Island, believed by some people to be the location of the parting of the Red Sea, as described in the Book of Exodus in the Bible.

Want to experience a bit more of the culture? Talented performers are on hand to entertain guests with Egyptian Folk dancing in the open-air Nafoura lounge. Belly dancing is another speciality on offer, which guests can enjoy whilst tucking into traditional Arabic mezzeh (appetizers). In the Observatory Lounge, aside from stunning views of the Red Sea which can be enjoyed under candlelight, there is also a spectacular selection of paintings and sculptures made by local artists. Finally, the Citadel Lounge draws in guests each evening with live band performances, as well as offering cocktails, pizzas, and other snacks and beverages throughout the day.

Accommodation-wise, the resort offers rooms, suites, and villas. The girls at Her Campus were particularly taken by the three-bedroom royal suite; practically a resort of your own, and great if you’re going with your family, or a group of friends. A private beach, garden, whirlpool and huge courtyard for al-fresco dining, make it the ultimate luxury getaway. And if the heat gets too much for you, there’s an Apple TV, iPad 3, and Wii, which are available upon request (although there’s something quite relaxing about giving up technology on holiday!)

Whilst Egypt isn’t the safest place in the world to travel to right now, the Foreign Office has confirmed that Red Sea resorts, such as Sharm El Sheikh, are safe for tourists. We’re already putting pennies in the travel piggy bank…!

Montana is a fourth year English Literature and French student and Travel Editor for HCX. She recently spent her year abroad in Paris interning in journalism and marketing for the International Herald Tribune and Twenga respectively. Her year abroad highlights include running the Paris half marathon, attending H&M's A/W 2013 fashion show and watching the women's semi-finals at the French Open. Montana also keeps a blog where she updates her readers on everything from travel and cultural outings to food and French men. When she's not accidentally offending French people with her unsubtle sarcasm, Montana can be found singing along to musical soundtracks, eating too much cheese, quoting Mean Girls, putting on a half-convincing American accent or lusting after anything purple. She's also a keen skiier and occasionally enjoys waterskiing and scuba-diving too. Montana's dream is to travel the world one day so she is thrilled to be Travel Editor for HCX this year and can't wait to start up the new section!
