The Golden Globes: A Recap

This year’s Golden Globes were unforgettable – not a term used lightly by HCX. The Golden Globes are always eagerly anticipated as they seem to pave the Hollywood way for the Oscar winners each year; it’s like going to a psychic in the comfort of your own home (and possibly pyjamas). But this year seemed particularly memorable – for its continuation of the hilarious and, even better, slightly sardonic Fey-Poehler rapport, Emma Thompson’s representing Britain in the best way possible (by taking advantage of the famous  open bar), Leo finally winning another Golden Globe and the surprise makeout session between Amy Poehler and Bono after she won her award.

The real stars of the show were Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, with their own brand of comedy that seemed to be appreciated more and more throughout the night, and probably as the open bar became drier and drier. HCX’s particular favourites were:

1)       “We’re going to get this done in three hours – or as Martin Scorsese calls it, act one.” (Tina Fey)

2)      “Gravity is nominated for Best Film. It’s the story of how George Clooney would rather float away into space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age”. (Tina Fey)

3)      “Matt [Damon], on any other night in another room, you would be a big deal. But tonight, and don’t take this the wrong way, you’re basically a garbage person.” (Amy Poehler)

4)      “Now, like a supermodel’s vagina, let’s say hello to Leonardo Dicaprio.” (Tina Fey)

There were so many great winners this year (quite a few wins from American Hustle in particular). Jennifer Lawrence won her second consecutive award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, Amy Adams and Cate Blanchett took home the awards for Best Actress in a Comedy and Drama, whilst a well-dressed (and totally good-looking) Matthew McConaughey won the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his role in Dallas Buyers Club. American Hustle and 12 Years A Slave both went home with Best Motion Picture awards in their categories, while Breaking Bad won the Best TV Drama series. Her Campus X has to admit, though, that their favourite winner was Leonardo DiCaprio for his role in Wolf of Wall Street – hopefully Leo can ride his victory wave all the way to his first, and entirely overdue, Oscar win.

However, this awards show was as controversial as it was fun. When Woody Allen won the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award, Diane Keaton’s strange but heart-warming tribute to the long-time director highlighted one of the greatest of Allen’s contributions to the Silver Screen: his incredible ability to write female characters such as Annie Hall, to the extent that 179 Hollywood actresses have starred in his 74 films. However, this award was almost immediately overshadowed by a tweet posted by Ronan Farrow, Allen’s son.

True or not, this spiteful tweet was on rather a public forum and ensured that the night was tainted for Woody Allen and his team.

At the ceremony there were yet more odd speeches. When Jaqueline Bisset, unfortunately the only British nominee to actually take an award home, heard she had won, it took her over a minute to get on stage where she gave a rambling and confusing acceptance speech.  She was either extremely shocked or a little tipsy. Either way everyone who went home with an award in their limo was deserving of it. There were at least no controversial wins. Now we can all look forward to the Academy Awards in February: the clothes, the interviews, the speeches and (fingers crossed) Leo’s win.
