Is A Freshers Fling A Good Thing?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

Theres no denying it, Freshers is an exciting time – in fact for some of us it’s the first time we’ve ever lived away from home. When this new independence is combined with copious amounts of alcohol and raging teenage hormones, chances are there are going to be a few stories in the morning after the night before… But are freshers flings a good idea?

Up and down the country, Freshers’ Week has a wide reputation for teenagers getting down and dirty, after all, YOFO (You’re Only a Fresher Once). In an exciting new place with loads of new people, it’s easy to get carried away after making eye contact with the cute guy from pre drinks or the hottie on the dance floor. Plus we’re all encouraged to play safe, as free condoms have been handed out all week, and you know how we students love a freebie.

That said, make sure you’re ready for the moment the beer goggles come off and reality sinks in. Just remember you can’t guarantee you’ll never see him again; in fact they could end up in your lectures or alongside you in the queue at Costa. Plus watch out for your reputation – you don’t want to be known as that girl after just your first week at Uni.

So feel free to have some fun and, you never know, you might well find someone special in Freshers week. I have a friend, now a 2nd year, who miraculously is still together with the first guy she spoke to when she arrived at Uni. Just a heads up though, this isn’t always the case… So just be aware of the consequences – you might have 3 years worth of awkward moments to put up with!
