Exeter New Year’s Bucket List

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

This week Her Campus Exeter have created a bucket list of the top 10 things to do in Exeter. With the New Year in full swing, why not add these Exeter specific activities to your resolution list and try and complete them by the end of the year…

1. Eat a Firehouse Pizza – If you are looking for a chilled night out look no further than the Old Firehouse. You may have heard rumours about the greatness of their pizza, so why not grab a few friends and challenge each other to the ‘Firehouse Pizza Challenge’. With its laid back atmosphere and range of live music, the Firehouse is always extremely popular every night of the week.

2. Take a trip down to the Quay – The next time you see the sun shining you must experience Exeter’s historic Quayside in its full glory. Popular for its lively pubs and restaurants, boat trips, and picturesque walk and cycle paths, the Quay has something for everyone. Just a 10 minute walk from the city centre, the Quay is the perfect destination, whether you are seeking active pursuits or a relaxing revision break.

3. Library all-nighter – Although the thought of this sends fear through our veins, at some point it has to be done. With dissertation and essay deadlines approaching, we will all inevitably end up spending a few of our nights in the library this term. Why not make your night more bearable by studying with friends and ordering a Domino’s straight to the library for a tasty revision break?

4. Exeter Cathedral – With one of Britain’s finest Cathedral’s on our doorstep, there really is no excuse not to pay a visit to the Cathedral. After experiencing the amazing architecture of the Cathedral, why not spend a sunny afternoon overlooking the picturesque grounds, while dining at Tea on the Green.

5. Underground Passages – As Exeter University students, Exeter’s Underground Passages are a must see. Situated in the heart of the city, the passages stretch under the High Street and are unique to Exeter itself. Book yourself a guided tour and explore the medieval streets which lie beneath your feet.

6. Rugby Varsity Match – Although the official Rugby Varsity match takes place in first term, this term Sandy Park stadium plays host to the South West Derby. The biggest student sporting event in the South West is a perfect opportunity for you to support your fellow Exeter students against Bath. After you have bled green to your heart’s content, why not round off the evening by attending the notorious Timepiece Wednesday to carry on the celebrations.

7. Itchy Feet – While many of you may have a soft spot for Exeter University’s very own school disco-esque student night club that is the Lemmy, why not try a different night out this term. Itchy Feet guarantees a fun-filled night, with a swinging 60s theme for you to boogie the night away.

8. Hijacked Festival – With this year’s festival launch having just happened, the festival itself is just around the corner. Dust off those bucket hats and high-vis windbreakers and snap up a ticket for Exeter’s finest music festival. Headliners such as Miss Dynamite and Big Narstie have previously graced Powderham Castle, and this year is set to be bigger and better than ever before!

9. Watch a student-run production – This term Phantom of the Opera will be performed at the Northcott theatre, presented by our very own Footlights Society. The show will be performed between January 27th and 30th at 7.30pm each night, with a Saturday afternoon matinee performance. You definitely do not want to miss out on what is guaranteed to be an incredible performance!

10. Run Rock Solid – This is the perfect opportunity for you to put your fitness and stamina to the test. You can endure an obstacle course (beware of the mud) in a festival atmosphere, while focusing on achievement and teamwork. Don’t worry – the event takes place at the end of March which gives you plenty of time to polish off your fitness skills.

Hopefully, we have given you some fresh ideas of things to do as you start a new term at Exeter. After all, can you really call yourself an Exeter University student having never eaten a Firehouse Pizza or been to Hijacked festival?
