Dressed for Success?: The Best and Worst of The Emmys 2013

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

Who got it right?

The star studded Emmy Awards took place on Sunday 22nd September in Los Angeles and Her Campus Exeter have compiled a list of the best and worst dressed attendees from the night. Do you agree or disagree? Let us know!

1. Sofia Vergara

The evening’s showstopping outfit has to belong to the beautiful Sofia Vergara, star of Modern Family, who wowed with her gorgeous Vera Wang dress. The V-neck showcases her best assets, whilst the beautiful fishtail design of the red lace gown completes the look with elegance. With simple hair and make-up, she wore the dress with confidence as she paraded the red carpet.

2. Claire Danes

A close contender for best dressed of the night has to go to the gorgeous Claire Danes and Homeland actress who channelled her inner romantic by wearing an Armani Prive nude strappy gown. Although some may see her pale choice as being safe, we think she looks stunning. The plunging neckline adds a touch of riskiness to an otherwise classic dress. Bravo Claire!

3. Linda Cardellini

The ‘Mad Men’ actress Linda Cardellini turned up in a stunning shade of purple wearing a Donna Karan Atelier dress. With pleats and folds in all the right places, her skintone and figure looked absolutely beautiful in the gown. Accessorising with a simple black clutch and black triangular earrings, she didn’t overdo this red carpet look and it really was a success!

Who got it wrong?

And now we turn to those actresses who the fashion police will be calling today after their disastrous attempts at red carpet glamour. Whether their crime was over-dressing, under-dressing or maybe just not shopping for their body type, there were a few mishaps at the Emmys and we are here to bring them all to you!

1. Lena Dunham

Unfortunately, Lena Dunham, the ‘Girls’ actress got everyone talking, but not for the right reasons as she walked the carpet in a shapeless Prada gown. We thought Prada could do no wrong, but Lena certainly disproves this. The quirky star has worn some beautiful gowns in the past and we were hoping for her to turn up in an equally stunning number but she got it wrong this time as the floral turquoise dress went down like a lead balloon.

2. Julianne Hough

Actress Julianne, who has starred in films with the likes of hotties Channing Tatum and Tom Cruise, left little to the imagination with her pastel blue Jenny Packham dress. Turning up with her Emmy-nominated brother Derek, she certainly stole the attention from him with her sheer beaded gown. The 25 year-old did redeem herself somewhat with her trendy tousled bob hairdo and minimalist make-up, but we definitely think the dress should be confined to the catwalk.

3. Jessica Pare

Finally, our last fashion offending star is Jessica Pare, a ‘Mad Men’ actress who really didn’t dress her slim figure to perfection. Wearing Oscar de la Renta, who are renowned for producing some beautiful dresses for red carpet events, this blue number fell flat. We think a slinkier number would have fitted Jessica perfectly, but instead she has too much material covering her gorgeous figure. Better luck next time!

Olivia Wilkerson is a third year Business Economics student and is very excited to take up her role as Fashion and Beauty Deputy Editor of Her Campus Exeter this year! Alongside her degree, she loves catching up with the latest trends by reading numerous magazines and blogs and uses this as inspiration for her own fashion and fitness blog which she has recently started. Fitness is important to her, so you may see her down the local gym working a sweat or at the local health food store (there's a great one on Well Street!) buying lots of lovely treats! This summer, Olivia will be going to the South of France to relax and scout out the St Tropez style icons as well as braving the potentially incredibly muddy fields of Glastonbury! As she is studying Spanish as part of her degree, she is also aiming to undertake an intensive course in Barcelona for a week, before returning to Exeter to study hard for third year! She hopes that working for Her Campus Exeter will allow her to meet lots of wonderful like-minded girls and to further develop HCX to make it the best it can be.
