A guy telling you he would like to ‘Grill you like a George Forman’ may cause an eye roll, but it is strangely flattering to hear once in a while whether we admit it or not. It may be a secret, but often we actually love chat up lines because, however awkwardly cringe they may be, we appreciate a boys’ attempt to strike up a conversation and ultimately make us laugh. Her Campus put these questions to the test at the original cheese generator: ‘Cheesy Tuesdays’ at Arena. So, armed with chat up lines and surrounded by plenty of old school classics, we attempted to prove that girls could be just as successful at making the first move.
Throughout the night there were a few unsuccessful attempts, including one boy just walking away without so much as a smile after we simply asked him: ‘Do you believe in love at first sight or should I walk past again?’ It was clear that either he couldn’t handle our lighthearted cheesiness, or the line itself was too unoriginal for him. Another failed effort was using ‘You’re hotter than a Bunsen burner set to full power’ on someone who pointed at their girlfriend as a response…
However, the majority of guys who were approached absolutely loved our efforts to chat them up! Laughter seemed to be the main response on the whole, which is good for us ladies because we all love a guy with a great sense of humour! The key to securing yourself a date is to be yourself, don’t take the lines too seriously and ensure that they’re single before you make your move!
Overall, the night taught us that girls shouldn’t shy away from using the corny lines, because it is an exciting way to start a conversation! Boys are often amused by your attempt to ‘play them at their own game’ and the replies may provide you with some new lines for future use! The secret to a good chat up line is originality – attempt a line that will grab a guy’s attention and leave them with a lasting impression of your evidently easygoing confidence. Although it may be a classic, everyone has heard the old ‘Did it hurt when you fell from heaven…’ a thousand times, so don’t be afraid to get creative!
So girls, do try this at home and take control of that boy on campus that you have secretly had your eye on… And remember – the funnier, the better! When delivered confidently, a cheesy chat up line is one of the best icebreakers and guarantees a laugh, if nothing else!
