There are so many wonderful charities out there, dedicated to helping a range of important causes. Recently, I have come across some that I had never heard of before, and it sent me down a research hole which I wanted to share with you! I try to do something big for charity each year. For example, in 2021, my friend and I walked 100 miles throughout October for the mental health charity Mind. The fact that I was directly helping and raising money for such an important issue was heartwarming and I really urge you to get involved in any way you can; even a small donation goes a long way. Whilst there are so many amazing charities out there, I’m going to give you a list of some that I have come across, some that mean something to me or some that I hadn’t heard of before…

Sands

This one is especially close to my heart. Working on the maternity unit during the university holidays, I see firsthand how this charity and the cause are incredibly important to so many people out there. Sands works with a range of people by supporting anyone affected by pregnancy loss or the death of a baby. Not only do they do regular fundraising, but they are actively a part of so many important scientific and political projects into many aspects of maternity care. This charity is so incredibly important to all families out there who have suffered bereavement related to pregnancy. There are so many ways to get involved here ranging from donations, knitting for Sands, or helping out with events.

Endometriosis UK

Again, another one very close to my heart. Some of you may have read my article ‘Painful Periods? Time to Speak Up’ which openly discusses my battle with the diagnosis and treatment of the condition. Approximately 10% of women worldwide suffer from this condition and I think it is so important to be aware of it and its impact. Their website is packed full of lots of really great information, advice, ways to get involved, and personal stories.

Winston’s Wish

Winston’s Wish supports children and young people who have experienced bereavement. They are incredibly important in helping these children process and channel their grief. It has a range of advice and forms of support for children, parents and schools who are looking to help. 92% of their income is based on voluntary donations, and like so many charities out there, they rely on our help to make things better. Their website lists multiple ways you can get involved such as joining their youth team, being a community ambassador volunteer, or taking part in the challenges and events they run regularly.

Blue Cross

I am sure you have all heard the pet stories of the Covid pandemic; so many people got animals, then upon returning to normal life, realised they were unable to care for them. Alongside this, the cost of living crisis has meant it has been difficult for people to care for their pets the best they can. The Blue Cross has been vital in helping a vast amount of people and animals in these difficult times. Now, as university students, we aren’t in a position to be adopting pets, but there are many ways you can contribute and make even a small difference. You can donate to the pet food banks, make a small donation, or get involved in their upcoming Steps for Pets challenge this May.

Gingerbread

Gingerbread is a charity dedicated to helping and supporting single-parent families across England and Wales. It is a really good resource for those who need a bit of support and some advice dealing with finances, care, housing and bereavement. They have lots of advice on several topics and challenges which may be happening within your family. Especially, in a cost of living crisis, I imagine that lots of families out there are struggling, and this website has some fantastic resources to help!
