Bridget Jones: The Death Of Mark Darcy

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

The 29th September was a sad day for all those who loved Mark Darcy (and reindeer sweaters), when it was announced by the Sunday Times that he was, in fact, no more.

Although his character was a successful human rights lawyer, Mr Darcy was better known by us for his underwear folding, stiff upper lip and comical fighting skills. Bridget and Mark’s comical story seemed so believable and realistic, as though it could have happened to anyone who was reading it, that we’re all secretly waiting for our own Mr Darcy now.  HCX is pretty sure that none of us will forget that moment when Darcy enveloped Bridget in his overcoat while she was standing in the snow.

When it came to Bridget and Mark, they gave us moments of rom-com gold with the added realism of things like Bridget rushing after someone in just her pants or talking dirty on speaker phone to Mark, the Head of Amnesty International and the Under Secretary for Trade and Industry.

The revelation of Mark Darcy’s death has both sparked furore amongst the chick-lit-loving community and piqued the interest of everyone else in the twittersphere. For example majpr publishers  Randomhouse  tweeting: ‘Crikey! Big #BridgetJones news coming out of the UK, @thesundaytimes #MarkDarcy’. This just proves how loved our modern-day Austen hero was and that the new book will have to patch up a hole in the hearts of “singletons” all over Britain.

Apparently, Bridget has found a new toyboy five years after Mark’s death. But here at HCX we’re worried that Helen Fielding has simply found a way for Bridget to turn back the clock and experience the same dating hardships we saw the first time around. Will there be anything new about this book or is Fielding re-hashing old ground?

We’re all wondering what’s next for Bridget and her two kids; what hilarious situations she’ll manage to get herself into. However, all the while we’ll be thinking how Mark won’t be around anymore to fend off rogue jellyfish stings from “smug married couples”. The question is: will Daniel Cleaver make an appearance in her life again and, if he does, who will then fight for Bridget’s honour?

No matter how great or disastrously funny Bridget’s next adventures are, Her Campus knows one thing for sure: Mark Darcy and his preference for women who’s “legs only come up to here” will be missed.
