Best of British: London Fashion Week 2013

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

London Fashion Week was a star-studded event that dominated the headlines last week and brought us a glimpse of the trends to come next Autumn/Winter. It was a spectacle on a level to rival New York Fashion Week which occurred the week previously. What’s more, London’s own Cara Delevigne owned the London runways this season and showed the rest of the world the importance of Britain and British models in the fashion stakes. Here’s our pick of the upcoming trends all of which showcase the best of British fashion. What’s more, London’s own Cara Delevigne owned the London runways this season and showed the rest of the world the importance of Britain and British models in the fashion stakes. Here’s our pick of the upcoming trends all of which showcase the best of British fashion.

Richard Nicoll

Best known for his modernist classics which offer day-to-night versatility, the London-based designer presented us with a touch of masculinity through clean-cut tailoring and over-sized bikers and blazers. Yet Nicoll beautifully offset the harsh lines of androgynous suits and pea coats with delicate pearl shades such as soft pinks, creams and greys, adding a subtle girly edge to his masculine designs. Look out for leather tops, skirts and dresses, a trend which looks set to continue right through to next winter. To brighten up cold winter mornings, accessorize with a touch of bright orange.

Matthew Williamson

By contrast, Matthew Williamson’s show offered floaty and feminine designs, complemented by Nordic inspired prints and embellishment. He used colours that evoke both Scandinavian snow and sunsets and textures from silky to tapestry-like for a diverse collection which is sure to have something for everyone.

To channel Williamson’s collection now, try wearing long tasselled necklaces over a shift dress for a night out. This turquoise beaded necklace from Topshop is great for a

student budget at only £14.

Jonathan Saunders

Scottish designer Jonathan Saunders is best known for his work with prints and he presented a show that focused on womanhood through retro 50’s style dress designs. Colours ranging from brights to khaki shades were teamed with velvety, silky and tweedy textures to create looks that offer a contemporary approach to classic designs. Invest in a corset-style top and a thin waist belt to channel this flattering collection which is bound to influence the high street.

Mulberry

Mulberry’s show exemplified true Best of British style, channelling British countryside heritage through a palette of forest green, oxblood red and checked tweed. Skater skirts and swing jackets were key to this collection, with layering adding both intrigue and cosiness to the looks. Saying this, our main concern with this collection was the return of the skirt over trousers, a 90s trend that we’d tried to forget. Will this catch on? We can only hope not!

While Exeter is still feeling the chill, be fashion forward in this Mulberry-esque check knit from ASOS £35. Not only will it carry you from the remainder of this winter to the next, the monochrome design is highly versatile. Team with a white shirt and black skater skirt for an evening out with friends, or with black skinny jeans and boots for a day in the Forum.

LFW has been an exciting week for British designers and British style. Even though most of us are sick of winter dressing and wrapping up to brace the elements, the shows have given us a fresh look at how we can dress for next season. But for now, HCX Fashion and Beauty Team are longing for summer, sun and holidays, so we can finally embrace Spring/Summer Trends. Watch this space for our article on how to update your wardrobe for Spring trends despite the cold!
