One of the biggest fashion trends of Autumn/Winter 2012 is definitely Baroque; it was all over the runway and takes its influence from the period of artistic style that originated in Italy in the 1600s. Many designers incorporated aspects of the style into their collections including Stella McCartney, Versace and Lanvin but the standout show was Dolce & Gabanna, who sent out their models donned in black with lashings of gold and beautifully extravagant accessories.

The look is all about opulence, luxury and drama, meaning it can be a hard style to pull off on a university girl’s budget, but it can be done! The high-street is overflowing with baroque inspired prints, statement jewellery and luxe fabrics; here is our pick of the best pieces that won’t mean you’ll have to go without food for the next week…

1)   A statement dress is an easy way to achieve the look; opt for a dark, slinky bodycon with sparkling embellishment (Lipsy – ÂŁ42) for a great evening outfit or go for a floral, floaty number to work the trend during the day.

2)   When choosing a top there are a variety of different ways you can take it, add just a subtle touch of delicate lace to your normal outfit (Next Velvet Top – ÂŁ36 ) or go all out with a bold symmetric print. Depending on what else you choose to wear and which accessories you choose, most of these can be dressed up or down and taken from day-to-night with maximum ease which will save you even more money.

3)   Patterned leggings are an excellent way to add some oomph to your outfit. You can pick up a great pair for an excellent price and they will bring a whole new dimension to any ensemble. Go for shorts if that’s more your style; pair with a plain top to draw attention to your legs, or be even more fashion-forward and wear with one of the above baroque tops to take on this season’s all-matching aesthetic.

4)   One of the very best aspects of Baroque is the jewellery; don’t be afraid to go all out with gold, silver, pearls and crystals: show no restraint! Think big statement pieces like chandelier earrings and chunky vintage inspired brooches. In terms of other accessories there are some very pretty printed clutches about at the moment and you can’t go wrong with a bit of faux fur on just about anything -look out for extra embellishment on your usual pieces such as gloves, hats, and scarves.

Channelling the baroque trend will be sure to add a touch of elegance to your everyday routine and make you the envy of every girl on campus. Hopefully we’ve shown that there are some absolutely stunning and affordable items available right now: you don’t have to spend a fortune to look like you have!
