5 Netflix Shows You Need To Watch

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter Cornwall chapter.

What better way to start the new year by than some good old fashioned Netflix procrastination?

1. Pretty Little Liars

The latest addition to the Netflix UK family is the teen mystery-thriller Pretty Little Liars! The show follows the daily lives of four best friends Aria Montgomery, Spencer Hastings, Hannah Marin, and Emily Fields. The girls’ friendship is tested to the limit when the leader of their clique, Alison DiLaurentice, goes missing at a sleepover. One year on, and still no sign of Alison, the girls mysteriously receive tauntings messages branded only with the letter “A”. But who is hiding behind this menacing guise?

2. American Horror Story

From Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, the creators of Glee, comes the darkly twisted horror anthology, American Horror Story! Netflix is currently streaming Seasons 1-3, with each series adopting a completely different storyline and characters. AHS Murder House (Season 1) tells the story of the Harmon’s, a troubled family, who move into an L.A home which is haunted by it’s past occupants. AHS Asylum follows the lives and stories of inhabitants at Briarcliff Manor, a sanitarium for the mentally ill, and AHS Coven centres on Miss Robichaux’s Academy, a school which aids in teaching young witches how to enhance and control their magical abilities.

The fourth season of American Horror Story, AHS Freak Show is not currently streaming on Netflix, and has just concluded on FX. However, you can still stream it online! The season is set in 1950’s Florida, and centres around a Freak Show led by the charismatic Elsa Mars (Jessica Lange).

3. The Returned

If you didn’t catch the French television series The Returned on Channel 4 back in 2013, be sure to check it out now! Often catgeorised as a supernatural crime thriller, The Returned centres around a cast of ghostly apparitions, which possess strikingly human characteristics. The show, which is adapted from Robin Campillo’s 2004 film ‘They Came Back’, is set in a drizzly French Alpine village, where men, women, and children return from the other side to walk amongst the living. Although the show’s audio is in French, it is accompanied by English subtitles and a chilling soundtrack from the Scottish band Mogwai.

4. Dexter

It doesn’t matter if you’ve already watched Dexter a million times before, there’s always room to watch it again! If you haven’t already seen it the show follows the shy and contemplative Dexter Morgan. By day works he works as a blood splatter analysist for the Miami Metro Police Department, and by the night doubles up as a beguiling serial killer who spares innocent people’s lives and goes for the already murderous and insane whack jobs. It’s all fun and games for Dex, and it’s safe to say we have a lot of fun watching him too!

5. Orange Is The New Black

Another popular TV series, which if you’re an avid Netflix procrastinator have probably already seen, is Orange Is the New Black. Yet for those who are still in the blue as to what it’s all about, look no further! OITNB revolves around the character of Piper Chapman, a young woman who is sentenced to 15 months in a woman’s federal prison for carrying drugs for the her ex girlfriend, Alex Vause. The show follows Piper’s daily life in prison, and of the people meets along the way. Truly hilarious, a show in which you won’t stop until you’ve run out of episodes. Seasons 1 and 2 are available on Netflix, with Season 3 airing in June this year. We can’t wait!

Happy Procrastinating!
