5 Horror Films to Watch This Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter Cornwall chapter.

Halloween is coming up quickly, so what would be better than a round-up of some of the best horror films to watch with your friends?

1. The Woman in Black

Starting off with one that is not going to leave you completely horrified, ‘The Woman in Black’ is a great film that will get you in to the Halloween mood as it is full of suspense and jump-scare moments. If you really enjoy this one, there is even a sequel. Starring Daniel Radcliffe, it focuses on a ghost story in Eel Marsh House as his character is sent to settle the affairs of Alice Drablow, the titular woman.

2.  The Exorcist

A cult-classic horror film. Do not fall into the misguided impression that it will not be as scary as modern horror films just because it was made in 1973; it is quite terrifying and up there with some of the scariest horror films I have ever watched.

3.  IT

Both the 1990 and 2017 versions are very good and equally worth the watch, however, I would argue that the newest version is slightly more creepy, due to the updated effects. Based on the Stephen King novel, ‘IT’ will leave you terrified of clowns, if you weren’t already.

4. The Shining

This list would not be complete without the Shining, and although I am sure most people will have already watched this classic horror film, it is definitely worth a re-watch. It’s a brilliant film about the descent into madness, leaving you somewhat traumatised. Who doesn’t love a film with Jack Nicholson in it?

5. Get Out

This may seem like an odd choice for this list, as it probably has not yet achieved a place as a classic horror film, but it is a great film to watch this Halloween and has made a huge impact on the horror genre . Focusing on Chris and his girlfriend, who have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of their relationship, they end up staying for the weekend at her parent’s house and Chris experiences a series of disturbing encounters within it. Coupling humour with horror, it is a great Halloween film.

This list could be completed by so many other horror films. Obviously, choose wisely what you wish to be scared by, and we would suggest not watching these on your own so that you have someone to hold onto when you inevitably jump in fright. Happy Horror Marathon!
