What It’s Like Having a Leap Year Birthday

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Endicott chapter.

This year is a leap year and that means I finally have a birthday again after waiting four years. Being born in the year 2000, I will be turning 20 and I will also be turning 5. Most people think it’s really cool meeting someone with a leap year birthday. There are both pros and cons about having this birthday. So here’s what it’s really like having a leap year birthday:

Pros

One of the main pros of having a leap year birthday is getting to say you were born on a leap year. A lot of people get really excited because most people don’t know anyone with a leap year birthday. It is also such a good fun fact for ice breakers wherever you go. A lot of places offer free food for your birthday but when you have a leap year birthday you get to reap lots of rewards. This year, on February 29, I could ski for free at Bretton Woods ski resort in New Hampshire. I can also eat for free a lot of places including a free entree at the Hard Rock Cafe or a free dessert at the Olive Garden. I also have access to loads of travel and hotel deals. The real decision is deciding where to go and what to eat because I have so many free options. One of the biggest perks of having a leap year birthday is having the excuse to go all out when you actually have a birthday because who doesn’t love to throw a giant party. This year I will certainly be going all out and the 29 comes on a Saturday this year which makes it even better.

Cons

While having a leap year birthday is cool there are some cons to it. For instance, if it’s not a leap year, a lot of the time people don’t know when to say happy birthday. Some leap year babies celebrate on February 28 and some on March 1. Personally I always celebrate the 28 for two reasons. One, my cousin’s birthday is on March 1st. And two, I was born on the last day of February not in March. The problem is sometimes people say happy birthday on the wrong day or they don’t say it at all because they don’t know when to. Although even if people do say happy birthday on February 28, it doesn’t feel right to me because it’s not my real birthday. It also gets annoying telling people that it’s not actually my birthday but that I just don’t have one this year.

Although sometimes I wish I had a birthday every year, for the most part I do like my birthday because it is cool telling people you were born on a leap year and having all the perks that come with it!
