In times of sadness or feelings of loss I tend to turn to poetry and writing to ease my emotions.

Writing can be the greatest form of venting, relaxation, and expression and I recommend it to anyone. This poem for me represents desire to be with the one you love, but my hope is that everyone can find their own message within it. There are always places to look for hope and strength, whether it be church, family and friends, nature or in this case the moon and stars.

Crescent Moon

The sheets wrinkle and the mattress sinks where he used to lay.

Each night seems to get darker

when every possible stress and worry circle her thoughts.

They wrap around her like a blanket

until she is surrounded by her own fears.

Each night seems to get colder

when she stares at his empty side of the bed.

His warmth has evaded.

His cologne has been masked from his pillow case.

She lays there awake in the silence of their home.

She longs for his touch, his warmth, his voice.

Her chest is hollow with loneliness that can only be healed with his presence.

When she looks out at the crescent-shaped moon, she sees him

and her heart fills with love and desire.

The moonlight shines onto the void in their bed, temporarily filling his spot.

It brings a sense of comfort. He sits on the edge of a stiff bed hundreds of miles away.

He takes off his cap and combat boots placing them aside

and takes the token she gave him out of his pocket.

He holds it each day as he marches, reminding him of who and what he’s fighting for.

He stares at the night sky and sees her in the shining stars above.

The longer he stares, the stars seem to form her in a beautiful constellation.

He can’t help but to grin at the thought of her.

He can taste the sweet syrupy banana pancakes they made together

on each blissful Sunday morning.

Those memories keep him at ease when nothing around him is peaceful.

They will always share the moon and stars.

No matter where they are or what they are doing,

they can always look to the sky and know the other will be doing the same.

Each sparkling star, each shine in the moon, each dazzling constellation.

The loneliness seems to fade each time the moon emerges.

They can feel in their hearts they will meet once again.

The glistening light dances on their skin in a sweet melody.
