We’ve all heard the speculation about who “wears the pants” in what relationship, and teased our friends who happen to be pants-less. But have you ever wondered what it really means to “wear the pants”?

Growing up, I never understood what this saying meant. I didn’t know whether I wanted to be the one with the pants or not—the whole concept was very confusing to me. Why wouldn’t I want to wear pants?
But as I got older, I learned that this saying, when applied to the girl in a relationship, has some very negative connotations.

The person who “wears the pants” in a relationship is considered to be controlling, while their pants-less partner is said to be—for lack of a better word—whipped. When
a guy is the one with the pants on, no one seems to notice. His friends don’t make fun of him for hanging out with his girlfriend, as long as they know and see that he’s supposedly in control. However, when a girl has the hypothetically cute pair of pants on, it does not go unnoticed.

Not only do these pants draw attention to her, but they make her feel secure in the relationship. “Wearing the pants” does not have to be frowned upon. If the girl is wearing the pants, it can be a symbol of her independence and strength as an individual.—rather than a symbol of her unbearable control.

Girls, if you do have the power and courage to “wear the pants” in your relationship, be sure that their hypothetical characteristics match the tangible characteristics of these LOFT pants. The pants are extremely comfortable, as you should be with your man, and make you look fabulous. The business casual style will make you feel responsible and in control—but don’t worry, boys, not too overbearing!
