Suggestions to Pass Time During Quarantine

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

Our cultural life stands still. Restaurants, movie theaters, and malls have closed, as have most other venues. The world is ticking a bit slower these days and we spend all our time at home. Instead of just watching TV and staring at our phones all day, we could also use our time more sensibly. Maybe use the state of emergency as an opportunity? Here are some suggestions.

1. Read Unread Books

At least half of the books sitting on your shelf have not been read. Passed over and postponed to a later date, you can now simply take five books and maybe make a beautiful literary discovery that has been dormant for a long time. You don’t even have to leave your own four walls for this.

2. Start a Diary

When we’re not in the middle of a pandemic, we rarely reflect on our everyday thoughts; we’re too busy stuck in our routine: get up, study, sleep. In an extreme situation like the coronavirus crisis, we have the chance to stop and ask ourselves – how am I actually? There are reasons Journaling has become a trend. Writing a diary can help you live more consciously, bring order to everyday chaos and keep a cool head.

3. Clean Your Closet

For years, there has been all sorts of clutter filling your closet that you will never wear, use, or need again. It’s time to get rid of those old clothes, shoes, and just random junk that has accumulated. What doesn’t belong in the trash can be sold or given away later.

4. Cook

This time at home is the perfect time to start cooking again or to first learn how. Grocery stores are open so the possibilities are endless: curry, roasts, and pasta are not rocket science and just require concentrated cooks and some love. Let’s not forget the amazing smell in the kitchen that creates a priceless feeling of comfort.

5. Learn Something

This will probably require a computer but that’s okay. You can finally go on Youtube and find tutorial videos for practically everything. Whether it’s Spanish vocabulary, a few chords on the guitar, or the fine art of meditation, now is your chance to master a new skill.

6. Just Do Nothing

Slow down and withdraw. Turn off your phone. Put away your computer and really relax. Don’t talk to anyone. Let yourself be along. I know it can be hard, but maybe this is the perfect time to think about what is really important in life. And if you really can’t do it, then maybe just listen to a podcast.
