Outfits at the Opera

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

Attending an opera or another formal event can always be a daunting task.  What do you wear when you are supposed to look sophisticated and presentable, yet you don’t want to look old?  It’s hard showing off your youth and style at an event where any amount of skin seems risqué.

Luckily, the Olsen twins have found an answer!  They attended the Met Opera this past week, and of course looked fashion-forward yet put-together.

A fur stole, especially one of a different color, adds a touch of youth to an otherwise dark ensemble, and dainty heels keep it polished while showing off your legs.  Dresses or skirts must be below the knee, and if you choose a black dress, make it a textured one to add some excitement.

Carry a small clutch (no oversized bags) that holds the necessities, and make sure to put your phone on silent!  A colored clutch also spices up an outfit, as does funky and colorful jewelry.  Wear your hair in a tasteful bun or in a sleek wave, and keep make up to a minimum.

You can still dress your age and add touches of youth and spirit (blue nail polish, a coral big-beaded necklace, a green stole, etc.) when attending a formal event, just do it in a tasteful way!

Jessica lives her life at several speeds. She talks too fast, eats too slow and over-analyzes too much.  When she’s not telling long-winded stories, sitting alone at the dinner table, or staring off into space, Jessica loves all things creative. Screenwriter, play director and poet at age 9, songwriter and choreographer at age 16, now, at 23, all she really wants to do is write, help others, and post Instagrams.  As a social media coordinator for multiple fashion brands, and a post-grad writer for Her Campus, she gets to do just that. Jessica is a Midwestern girl from the suburbs of Chicago, but she fell in love with city living during a summer internship in the Big Apple, and now calls NYC home. Jessica loves chocolate milkshakes, dance parties, Chippewa Ranch Camp, Friends re-runs, Chuck Bass and of course, spending time with her fans (read: family and friends).
