No Shave November!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

As you might have already realized, it’s that time of the year to pack those razors away… it’s No Shave November! While many believe this is just an excuse to stop shaving as you enter hibernation for the winter, and some call it “No sex November,” there is actually a cause behind it.

No Shave November is a month long event sponsored by the American Cancer Society as a way to help raise awareness about cancer, specifically prostate cancer. Participants are embracing their hair and letting it grow wild and free. Men often don’t shave their faces, while woman don’t shave their legs. This great cause allows people to show that appearance isn’t everything.

While October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, many specify No Shave November as “Movember,” a combination of moustache and November. The Movember Foundation, which began in 2004, aims to increase early cancer detection, diagnosis effective treatments and ultimately reduce the number of preventable deaths. As of 2012, the Global Journal ranked Movember in the top 100 non-government organizations in the world.

A tradition of No Shave November or Movember is to take a picture of yourself every day to see the ‘stach progress and document the creative styling techniques. The pictures show how fast hair really does grow and reminds cancer patients that their hair will come back.

So, while many of us complain about our excess body hair, just for a month show some support for cancer patients undergoing treatment and dare to grow the hair! You have 11 other months to flaunt that smoothly waxed and shaven body. Plus, it’s an excuse to be lazy! But if people ask you why you’re rocking the hair, tell them about this great cause.

So, I must-ache you a question,

How will you participate in No Shave November?

For those of you who don’t want to strut the scruf style all November long, support cancer awareness by making a donation!
