Mixing the Elements of Science and Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

Taking two courses with labs is very demanding— not just on your schedule and psyche, but also on your fashion choices. The strict dress requirement of pants and closed toed shoes proceeds to puzzle dually science and style-obsessed girls, such as myself, on how to dress for class.  While the shoe restriction accommodates edgy booties or snakeskin flats to punch up an outfit, the issue of pants is a whole other concern.

Hypothesis: If a lab-dwelling fashionista has a required dress code of pants and closed toed shoes, then she will figure out a way to spice up her outfits within the restrictions.

Prediction: The fall ’12 trend of patterned denim will add breadth to any girl’s wardrobe and promote effortlessly cool outfits that are easy to wear for lab.

Materials and Methods: One constant in your lab wardrobe this fall should be denim.  It’s making a statement this season and is totally unapologetic about it. Bust out some skinnies in rich shades such as deep emerald, dark red, and wine; and all goggles will be on you! Don’t forget that subtly patterned skinnies such as dusty florals or muted animal prints can work as neutrals. Designs such as stripes, polka dots and camo are on point right now, so don’t hesitate to incorporate them into your lab attire.

Conclusion: Lab can be boring, but that doesn’t mean your outfit has to be!

Jessica lives her life at several speeds. She talks too fast, eats too slow and over-analyzes too much.  When she’s not telling long-winded stories, sitting alone at the dinner table, or staring off into space, Jessica loves all things creative. Screenwriter, play director and poet at age 9, songwriter and choreographer at age 16, now, at 23, all she really wants to do is write, help others, and post Instagrams.  As a social media coordinator for multiple fashion brands, and a post-grad writer for Her Campus, she gets to do just that. Jessica is a Midwestern girl from the suburbs of Chicago, but she fell in love with city living during a summer internship in the Big Apple, and now calls NYC home. Jessica loves chocolate milkshakes, dance parties, Chippewa Ranch Camp, Friends re-runs, Chuck Bass and of course, spending time with her fans (read: family and friends).
