As a transfer student, there were times when I felt like a freshman all over again. Sure, the campus tour covers the basics, but getting to know the nooks and crannies of many buildings, the comfiest places to study, the best places to get salads, and the quickest shortcuts across campus definitely took awhile. But, if a friend wasn’t nearby to ask a question, I quickly discovered that there was something else I could always count on to have the answer: the DUC Information Desk.
Located on the main floor of the DUC, nudged in-between the staircase and the Emory bank, the DUC Info. desk has all the answers. Whether you want to know where the Emory Wheel Office is (it’s hidden on the 5th floor), where the nearest place to print your paper is (did you know there’s an Emory card deposit machine in White Hall?), or simply when the next Clairmont shuttle will come (or if it even will), they always know the answer.
I was skeptical at first because no one seemed to even notice the little cluttered space. But once I asked my first question, I was surprised by how helpful and instantaneous the answer was from the friendly Emory student sitting behind it. I have since become reliant on the all-knowing students that work at the desk for any quick question…and for the desk’s oversized bottle of Purell.
Not only does this desk offer guidance, it offers tickets galore. You can buy tickets there anytime for Emory events, movies, plays, the aquarium, museums, MARTA and every Atlanta sports team. It’s also way easier than ordering tickets online and most of the time you get a student discount.
Emory student manager of the DUC Ben Carr, says, “The desk offers a lot more than just information about campus locations. A lot of people come up asking us what we have.”
But of course, the most common question he gets is, “where is the bathroom?”
David Silverstein, another student manager of the DUC, believes the often-overlooked desk is open to suggestions for improvement upon student demand. “The desk is kind of one of those things where the more used it is, the better it is,” says Silverstein.
However, students have voiced requests in the past and these suggestions have been implemented into the desk’s workings. “The thing that I would change is that I would offer more off-campus tickets, but we’ve done that in the past and there hasn’t been a lot of demand for it so that’s why we don’t anymore,” adds Carr.
Next time you walk by the DUC info desk, think twice before riding it off. If you have a question, ask them! If you have an idea of what could make the desk better, don’t hesitate to let them know!
