How to: Dress for the Gym and Class

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

Let’s face it, there are never enough hours in the day. It’s hard finding the time to go to class, study, keep up with friends, and still maintain the healthy habit of powering out to your favorite playlist at the WoodPEC. Whether you live in Dobbs or Gables, finding the motivation to change out of your lecture hall attire and into apparel more fit for breaking just a little bit of a sweat at the gym is a work out in its own right.

Here it is: your style guide for dressing trendy for class and cute for the gym – all in one outfit.

First, I’d like to stress a key precondition for getting dressed. Always remember: You never know who you might run into. At the library or on the elliptical, looking your best is important to achieve the beautiful confidence of feeling your best.

Skip out on the baggy t-shirt and sweatpants “look,” no matter how tempting it may be.
Also, investing in some fabulous new workout clothes will inspire your well-dressed-self to work out more!

When it comes to dressing for the gym: “It’s all about the black and neon,” according to my most trusted fashion-savvy and gym-frequenting friend.

Quality spandex performance leggings are flattering and make for perfect workout wear. I recommend sticking to the classic black coloring.

Pair your black workout pants with a solid-colored performance tank top. If you’re not quite ready to part with your t-shirt wearing ways, reppin’ some school spirit with an Emory crew neck shirt is the way to go.

Now, what truly creates a trendy gym look is flaunting a pair of neon sneakers, as popularized by Nike. The online store has so many variations to choose from—you can even customize your own! These shoes are the staple of this look.

Add a water bottle for some healthy hydration into the equation, and voila – you’re ready get down in style at the WoodPEC! (Hint: here’s a great opportunity to “go green” with a reusable bottle.)

Finally, transitioning your outfit for class is made simple by one article of clothing: the chunky knit sweater. This style of sweater, either in an off the shoulder fashion or as a thick drapey cardigan, should be sported in a neutral color to offset your awesome neon sneakers. This sweater tones down the athleticism of gym apparel and instantly adds a chic quality to your look.

Throw on a pair of aviators, swipe on your favorite lip-gloss, and you are ready for the day!
