You went to the career center, you perfected your resume, you researched the company and you’ve landed the interview.  Now all you have left to do is charm your interviewer, wrong. Anything you say could mean nothing if your outfit is deemed inappropriate.  This guide should help you when venturing into the daunting world of job interviews.

The overarching rule is air on the side of conservative.  Never do you hear, “that girl did not show enough skin.” That being said, different jobs call for different types of attire.  It is important to know your audience.  For example, if you are looking to work for a law firm a skirt and tailored blazer might be your best option in a darker color.  However, if you are looking to go into advertising, a dress in a brighter color might show off your creative side.

Regardless of what you choose to wear there are a few basic rules every career-oriented woman should be aware of:

  1. Go easy on the jewelry. In most cases less is more.  A single statement piece is all you need.
  2. Make sure you nails are well groomed and not painted with the newest jarring shade put out by OPI.
  3. As tempting as it is, bare legs are something to avoid even on warm days.
  4. Leave some things to the imagination- the hemline of your skirt or dress should be no shorter than three inches above the knee.
  5. Make sure you wear sensible heels, aka not the same heels you wore the night before at Maggie’s.

If you follow these simple rules and you are still wondering what you should wear, the litmus test is: would I wear this outfit to brunch with my entire family?  If your answer is yes, then you are probably dressed appropriately.  Lastly, remember, if you are comfortable and confident in what you are wearing , the rest should come easily.  Best of luck as you step out into the working world ladies!

Jessica lives her life at several speeds. She talks too fast, eats too slow and over-analyzes too much.  When she’s not telling long-winded stories, sitting alone at the dinner table, or staring off into space, Jessica loves all things creative. Screenwriter, play director and poet at age 9, songwriter and choreographer at age 16, now, at 23, all she really wants to do is write, help others, and post Instagrams.  As a social media coordinator for multiple fashion brands, and a post-grad writer for Her Campus, she gets to do just that. Jessica is a Midwestern girl from the suburbs of Chicago, but she fell in love with city living during a summer internship in the Big Apple, and now calls NYC home. Jessica loves chocolate milkshakes, dance parties, Chippewa Ranch Camp, Friends re-runs, Chuck Bass and of course, spending time with her fans (read: family and friends).
