Creatures of the Wind

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

Despite the searing temperatures here at Emory, the fashion world goes on, introducing runway shows with edgy fall looks and cozy knit sweaters (a fashion trend that seems to never go out of style)! One hot designer duo to keep your eyes on is Shane Gabier and Chris Peters, who are the masterminds behind the ultra-luxe, chic label Creatures of the Wind.

Based in Chicago, this once tiny business has now blossomed into something much larger. The Creatures’ designers love to incorporate their own personal brand of weirdness and “hyper-individuality with gusto,” as stated by Eric Wilson. The kooky style of the Fall 2012 line definitely captured the attention of audience members, with its title alone drawing confused glances and curious inquiries prior to the show. The fall 2012 Creatures of the Wind show was entitled “The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns and Fairies,” named after a seventeenth-century book by Scottish Robert Kirk. It tells the tale of the supernatural and otherworldly phenomena.

The runway show was an ode to the dream-like qualities in the book, mixing stripy mohair sweaters with silk slip-dresses in clashing prints, trimmed blazers made from distressed leather with button-down blouses, and silver-dipped lace skirts with autumnal colored patterns. The effect was folksy and effortless, with an added touch of necessary couture. The show wowed audiences, giving them a taste of this designer duo.

While a stunning fall performance, critics say the spring 2013 Creatures show is slightly more understated, with a focus on the fashion rather than performing a show. We’ll start to see sleeker lines and more attention to fabric draping and silhouettes in the spring 2013 show. Creatures of the Wind is starting to grow more popular and become more widely known among celebrities, designers, fashionistas, and even young adults in their 20s (thanks to some of their more reasonable prices!). It’s only a matter of time before we see the pale blue ruffled chiffon finale gown on a celebrity at the next red-carpet event!

She talks too fast, eats too slow and over-analyzes too much.  When she’s not telling long-winded stories, sitting alone at the dinner table, or staring off into space, Jessica loves all things creative. Screenwriter, play director and poet at age 9, songwriter and choreographer at age 16, now, at 23, all she really wants to do is write, help others, and post Instagrams.  As a social media coordinator for multiple fashion brands, and a post-grad writer for Her Campus, she gets to do just that. Jessica is a Midwestern girl from the suburbs of Chicago, but she fell in love with city living during a summer internship in the Big Apple, and now calls NYC home. Jessica loves chocolate milkshakes, dance parties, Chippewa Ranch Camp, Friends re-runs, Chuck Bass and of course, spending time with her fans (read: family and friends).
