A Collegiette’s Guide to Today’s TV

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

In the words of Monica Geller of Friends, “some would say it is an end of an era”. And Monica, we feel you. Many of our beloved television shows, the series we grew up with, are in their final seasons! These series finales are both anticipated and dreaded (I mean who wants to say goodbye to Chuck Bass forever?!) As we say goodbye to Gossip Girl, Grey’s Anatomy and many others classics, we decided to make a list of some newer shows that definitely deserve Collegiettes’ attention!

Introducing the Her Campus Emory TV Guide, created by the experts (we watch 39 shows a week between the three of us…no judgment).

For the Office Lover…

1. Parks and Recreation
Topping our list is NBC’s Parks and Recreation starring Amy Poehler, Aziz Ansari, Adam Scott, and literally everyone funny. You can find us laughing out loud every Thursday night at 9 pm to this well thought out show. We have turned many people onto this show and they thank us with all their hearts. If you want a taste of Parks, we recommend watching our favorite episode, The Fight. Clever jokes and outright hilarious storylines make this show something that cannot be missed. PS: you can skip the first season when trying to catch up.

2. Partners
Similar to Will & Grace, Partners follows the lives of two best friends, one straight and one gay. Each episode is about how the best friends involve themselves in every extent of each others lives. “Sometimes I feel like work gets in the way of my drama”. Plus, everyone’s favorite high school slut Brooke Davis is back on this new show. Partners is on CBS on Mondays at 8:30.

 For the Gossip Girl Obsessed…

3. Pretty Little Liars
Just like Gossip Girl, PLL is a TV show based on a book series and is filled with mystery and non-stop drama. PLL follows four girls who being tormented by an unknown character “A,” following the murder of their best friend. Warning: although this show is on ABC Family, we cringe and scream every week from the scariness. Pretty Little Liars just had a special Halloween episode, but returns in January on ABC Family’s drama Tuesdays.

4. Vampire Diaries
As if the hotties in this show weren’t enough, the tears it evokes and the fear you feel make it all worthwhile. Recently orphaned Elena finds solace in the new boy to town, Stephan. She soon finds out that he is a vampire and that her life isn’t anything but ordinary. Nonstop drama, a few tears, and some nail biting vampire bloodsucking moments keep us on the edge of our seats every Thursday at 8 on the CW.

For the Grey’s Anatomy addicts…
5. Parenthood
If you’re looking for a more serious show, we recommend watching Parenthood. It portrays a large family in a very realistic manner. At the start of the third season, we feel unbelievably attached to some of these characters (we may even shed a tear now and then). From love triangles to parental problems, Parenthood covers it all. Parenthood is on NBC on Tuesdays at 10 pm.

6. Nashville
For the country girl in all of us (let’s be real, we all go to school in Georgia), Nashville is the perfect new show that combines drama, music, and some steamy love scenes in a fresh and exciting way. Some call it Glee 2.0 (there is a lot of singing,), but it’s similar to Grey’s because of its more serious story lines and adult protagonists. You can find Nashville on ABC Wednesdays at 10 pm.

If none of these shows strike your fancy, we also suggest tuning into Homeland, Revenge, Good Wife, How I Met Your Mother, 90210, 2 Broke Girls, Once Upon a Time, Glee, Castle, Covert Affairs, Hart of Dixie, New Girl, Happy Endings, Mindy Prohect, The Middle, Modern Family, Guys with Kids, Criminal Minds, Law and Order: SVU, 30 Rock, Up All Night, Suburgatory, Whitney, and Underemployed.

Happy TV Watching!!!!!!

Jessica lives her life at several speeds. She talks too fast, eats too slow and over-analyzes too much.  When she’s not telling long-winded stories, sitting alone at the dinner table, or staring off into space, Jessica loves all things creative. Screenwriter, play director and poet at age 9, songwriter and choreographer at age 16, now, at 23, all she really wants to do is write, help others, and post Instagrams.  As a social media coordinator for multiple fashion brands, and a post-grad writer for Her Campus, she gets to do just that. Jessica is a Midwestern girl from the suburbs of Chicago, but she fell in love with city living during a summer internship in the Big Apple, and now calls NYC home. Jessica loves chocolate milkshakes, dance parties, Chippewa Ranch Camp, Friends re-runs, Chuck Bass and of course, spending time with her fans (read: family and friends).
